Mumbai: With the objective of developing world-class logistics infrastructure and strengthening rail-based freight movement, a two-day high-level coordination meeting between the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL), Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPT), and Western Railway concluded on Thursday.
The discussions focused on accelerating the completion and operationalisation of the Vaitarna–JNPT section of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC), a critical link that will connect India’s largest container port directly to the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) network.
Strategic Push to Connect JNPT with DFC Network
Once the Vaitarna–JNPT section becomes operational, JNPT will be seamlessly connected to the national DFC network, enabling direct rail connectivity between the port and multiple states across the country.
Officials noted that this connectivity is expected to:
- Significantly enhance rail-based cargo handling capacity
- Accelerate freight movement
- Reduce overall logistics costs
- Improve the efficiency and reliability of container transportation
The initiative aligns with the government’s broader goal of creating globally competitive logistics infrastructure.
