New Delhi: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Army have signed a Joint Working Arrangement (JWA) to accelerate the development of futuristic military technologies and strengthen collaboration in advanced defence research.
The agreement was signed on August 25, 2026, bringing together key stakeholders from the Armed Forces, research institutions, industry and academia to support the development of technologies aimed at meeting India’s future military requirements.
DRDO and Indian Army Sign Joint Working Arrangement
The JWA was signed between the Director General (Technology Management), DRDO, and the Director General (Military Operations), Integrated Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence (Army).
The signing ceremony was held in the presence of the Defence Secretary, Secretary DDR&D and Chairman DRDO, highlighting the strategic importance attached to strengthening technology development for the Armed Forces.
Focus on Futuristic Defence Technologies
The new arrangement will institutionalise collaboration between the F&T Cell of the Indian Army and DRDO’s Directorate of Futuristic Technology Management.
The framework is designed to create a structured mechanism for identifying, developing and advancing futuristic technologies relevant to the operational requirements of the Indian Army.
DIA Centres of Excellence to Support Collaboration
The JWA institutionalises collaboration between the F&T Cell of the Indian Army and DRDO’s Directorate of Futuristic Technology Management.
The collaboration will be pursued through Defence Innovation and Acceleration (DIA) Centres of Excellence (DIA-CoEs).
These centres will facilitate greater interaction among:
- Indian Armed Forces
- DRDO researchers
- Academic institutions
- Defence industry
- Technology and research organisations
This coordinated approach is expected to help identify, develop and advance technologies relevant to the future operational requirements of the Indian military.
Strengthening India’s Next-Generation Defence Capabilities
The Joint Working Arrangement is aimed at creating a more organised pathway for the development of next-generation military technologies.
By bringing the Armed Forces and technology development ecosystem closer together, the framework is expected to support research that is aligned with future operational requirements.
The partnership also reinforces the focus on greater coordination between users, researchers, academia and industry in developing advanced defence capabilities for India.
