Deoria, UP: Former Uttar Pradesh IPS officer Amitabh Thakur, who has been lodged in Deoria Jail in connection with a fraud case, received a significant legal reprieve on Monday after the District Judge’s court granted him bail.
However, the court rejected the anticipatory bail application filed by his wife and co-accused, Nutan Thakur, in the same matter, leaving her with the option to approach the High Court or surrender before the trial court.
Court Proceedings and Bail Conditions
According to District Government Counsel (Criminal) Rajesh Mishra, Amitabh Thakur’s bail application was thoroughly examined in court on Monday. After considering arguments from both the prosecution and the defence, the court allowed Thakur’s bail, directing him to furnish two sureties of ₹1 lakh each.
On the other hand, the court dismissed Nutan Thakur’s anticipatory bail plea, citing insufficient grounds for relief. She now faces the choice of appealing to the High Court or submitting herself before the trial court in Deoria.
Legal Complications Remain
Despite being granted bail in the Deoria fraud case, Amitabh Thakur’s legal challenges are far from over. The District Government Counsel noted that another case has been registered against him in Lucknow, and a “B warrant” issued by a court there has already been served at Deoria Jail.
This implies that his immediate release from jail may not be possible, even after securing bail in the current case, pending the outcome of the Lucknow matter.
