Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan: The post of Superintendent of Police (SP) in Jhunjhunu district has witnessed relentless changes since 1947, with 67 officers transferred in 76 years. This means the district has, on average, seen a new police captain nearly every 11 months. The latest to take charge is IPS Brijesh Jyoti Upadhyay, who will assume office on Wednesday following the transfer of his predecessor, Sharad Chaudhary, who was removed amid complaints.

Political Pressure and Law & Order Challenges Drive Transfers
The constant transfers are largely attributed to political interference, shifts in power, and pressing law and order concerns. Jhunjhunu has been grappling with serious cases involving police custody deaths, raising questions about policing standards. Meanwhile, crimes like extortion, robbery, assault, murder, and gang wars continue to challenge the district’s stability.
A significant difficulty for the Jhunjhunu police has been the escape of accused persons through the neighboring Haryana border, which weakens police control and hampers law enforcement.
The newly appointed SP, Brijesh Jyoti Upadhyay, inherits the task of restoring law and order, curbing gang warfare and organized crime, and improving the district’s traffic management.
Longest and Shortest Tenures in Jhunjhunu History
Among the many officers who have served, IPS Himmat Singh holds the record for the longest tenure at Jhunjhunu, serving approximately three years and five months. In stark contrast, some officers had extremely brief stints: IPS Gyanchandra Yadav served for just four days, while IPS Lalit Mohan’s tenure lasted only ten days. IPS Ravindra Singh Dhillon held the post for just over a month.
