Indian Masterminds Stories

New Delhi: Highlighting the pivotal role of India’s manufacturing sector in national growth, Mr. Deepak Gupta, Director (Projects) at GAIL (India) Limited and Chairman of Talcher Fertiliser Limited, delivered the keynote address at the 4th Technology Meet organized by Larsen & Toubro (L&T) at the Hyatt Regency, New Delhi.

The event brought together a distinguished gathering of stakeholders from across the energy and process industries, including representatives from licensors, consultants, exploration & production (E&P) companies, refineries, petrochemical and fertilizer firms—many of whom are part of L&T’s extensive client base.

Manufacturing: The Engine of India’s Economic Growth

In his address, Mr. Gupta emphasized that India’s manufacturing sector is central to boosting GDP growth and creating large-scale employment opportunities. He noted that with the help of technology and digitalization, project execution timelines that once spanned many years have now been compressed to just 36–42 months, allowing for the completion of mega infrastructure and industrial projects at record pace.

95% Localization in Precision Equipment: A Make in India Milestone

Commending L&T and other Indian firms, Mr. Gupta praised the industry’s capability to indigenously manufacture nearly 95% of the complex and precision equipment used in refinery and petrochemical projects. He described this achievement as a major contribution to the Government of India’s “Make in India” initiative, supporting the broader vision of self-reliance in manufacturing.

Call for Indigenous Development of High-End Equipment

While celebrating the milestones already achieved, Mr. Gupta also addressed future challenges, especially the need to indigenously develop high-end industrial equipment such as heavy-duty gas turbines, compressors, cold boxes, and extruders, which are currently being imported.

He urged the industry to accelerate investment in research and development (R&D) and adopt emerging technologies to ensure that India becomes a global hub of advanced manufacturing excellence.

A Vision for Self-Reliant, Technologically Advanced India

Concluding his remarks, Mr. Gupta extended his best wishes for the success of the Technology Meet and encouraged all stakeholders to continue innovating and collaborating. He reiterated the importance of working together to realize the vision of a self-reliant and technologically empowered India.
