Gandhinagar: Gandhinagar has taken a significant step toward strengthening its Smart City infrastructure with the launch of the PM eBus Sewa scheme, introducing a modern, eco-friendly, and efficient public transport system in the state capital, according to an official release.
The initiative, launched under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is part of a nationwide effort to promote sustainable urban mobility and reduce pollution through electric public transport.
National-Level Green Transport Initiative
The PM eBus Sewa scheme is a centrally sponsored programme aimed at transforming urban transport across India into a cleaner and more efficient system. The initiative has an estimated total outlay of ₹57,613 crore, including a ₹20,000 crore contribution from the Central Government.
Implemented through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, the scheme plans to deploy 10,000 electric buses across various cities in the country, marking a major shift toward green mobility solutions.
Gandhinagar Gets 100 Electric Buses
Under the scheme, Gandhinagar has been allocated 100 electric midi buses to enhance its urban transport network. The project is being managed by Gandhinagar Greenline Transport Service Limited (GGTSL), a special purpose vehicle created by the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation.
In the first phase, 40 fully air-conditioned electric buses have already been introduced on operational routes, providing residents with cleaner and more comfortable travel options.
Modern Features and Passenger Comfort
Each electric midi bus is approximately nine metres long and designed to carry 25 seated and 13 standing passengers. The buses focus on accessibility and inclusivity, featuring:
- Hydraulic ramps for persons with disabilities
- Four reserved seats for women
- Four reserved seats for senior citizens
- Fully air-conditioned interiors for passenger comfort
These features aim to ensure safe, inclusive, and comfortable commuting for all sections of society.
Digital India Integration and Cashless Travel
In alignment with the Digital India initiative, all PM eBus Sewa vehicles are equipped with Electronic Ticketing Machines. These systems support:
- QR code payments
- UPI transactions
- Other digital payment methods
The move encourages cashless commuting and enhances efficiency in fare collection and passenger convenience.
Dedicated Depot and Charging Infrastructure
A specialised depot and charging facility has been developed at Sargasan at an estimated cost of ₹17 crore. The facility includes:
- Advanced electric charging stations
- Maintenance infrastructure
- Integrated operational control systems
This infrastructure ensures uninterrupted operations and efficient management of the electric bus fleet.
18 Routes Connecting Key Areas in Gandhinagar
The electric bus service operates across 18 major routes covering important residential, institutional, and commercial locations. These include:
Sargasan, Pathikashram, Secretariat, Gandhinagar Railway Station, Mahatma Mandir, GIFT City, Chiloda, Dahegam, Kadi, Kalol, Chandkheda, Dhamasan, Naradipur, Sonipur, Kotha, Adraj Moti, Tintoda, IIT Gandhinagar, Dabhoda, and Mansa.
The extensive network aims to improve last-mile connectivity and ease urban commuting.
Affordable Fare Structure and Free Travel Offer
The fare system is designed to remain affordable for all passengers, with ticket prices ranging from ₹5 to ₹30 based on distance travelled.
To promote adoption, travel on all PM eBus Sewa routes will remain free for the first 15 days after launch. Additionally, children under five years of age will continue to enjoy free travel even after the promotional period ends.

The Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation has reiterated its commitment to providing safe, clean, and sustainable transport solutions through this initiative. Officials stated that the PM eBus Sewa launch marks a major milestone in advancing Gandhinagar’s Smart City vision and promoting environmentally responsible urban development.
