New Delhi/Banyuwangi: The 11th edition of the India-Indonesia Joint Special Forces Exercise GARUDA SHAKTI commenced in Banyuwangi, Indonesia, on October 27, 2026. The exercise will continue until November 6, 2026, bringing together Special Forces personnel from both countries for joint training and operational cooperation.
The Indian contingent comprises troops from the Parachute Regiment (Special Forces), while the Indonesian contingent consists of personnel from the Indonesian Special Forces. The exercise provides an opportunity for both sides to train together, exchange operational knowledge and develop a shared understanding of special operations in challenging environments.
Focus on Jungle Warfare and Special Operations
Exercise GARUDA SHAKTI aims to strengthen mutual understanding, cooperation and interoperability between the Special Forces of India and Indonesia. A key focus of the training is the exchange of tactics, techniques and procedures for conducting special operations in jungle environments.
The training programme includes obstacle crossing, combat marksmanship, mountaineering, air assault training and combat-hardening sessions. These activities are intended to improve the troops’ ability to operate in demanding terrain and respond effectively to complex operational situations.

The exercise also provides a platform for the exchange of expertise and information relating to weapons, equipment and operational practices. Such interactions help the participating contingents understand each other’s capabilities and approaches to mission planning and execution.
Validation Exercise to Test Operational Readiness
The joint training will culminate in a validation exercise designed to simulate realistic operational scenarios. The exercise will assess the endurance, coordination and combat readiness of both contingents while providing an opportunity to apply the skills and procedures practised during the training phase.
The validation exercise will also test the ability of the two forces to coordinate their actions and operate together under demanding conditions. This practical component is an important element of joint military training, helping translate individual and collective training into coordinated operational performance.
Strengthening India-Indonesia Defence Cooperation
Exercise GARUDA SHAKTI is part of the broader defence cooperation between India and Indonesia. Joint military exercises allow the armed forces of both countries to share professional experience, improve interoperability and develop closer working relationships.
The participation of Indian and Indonesian Special Forces in the 11th edition of the exercise underscores the importance both countries attach to specialised military cooperation. The training in Banyuwangi is expected to further strengthen mutual understanding and contribute to closer bilateral defence relations.
Through joint drills, operational exchanges and realistic scenario-based training, GARUDA SHAKTI continues to provide a platform for enhancing cooperation between the Special Forces of the two nations.
