Washington: Gita Gopinath, the First Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), is set to step down from her position and return to academia. She will rejoin Harvard University’s Economics Department as the inaugural Gregory and Ania Coffey Professor of Economics starting September 1, 2025, the IMF confirmed on Tuesday.
End of a Defining Era at the IMF
Gopinath, who made history as the first woman to serve as the IMF’s Chief Economist, described her departure in a statement on X (formerly Twitter):
“After nearly 7 amazing years at the IMF, I have decided to return to my academic roots.”
She joined the IMF in January 2019 as Chief Economist and was elevated to First Deputy Managing Director in January 2022. During her tenure, Gopinath played a pivotal role in navigating the global economy through turbulent times, including the COVID-19 pandemic, inflationary pressures, and geopolitical disruptions.

A Return to Academic Excellence
Before her time at the IMF, Gopinath was a leading academic. She served as the John Zwaanstra Professor of International Studies and Economics at Harvard from 2005 to 2022 and was an assistant professor at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business from 2001 to 2005. Her return to Harvard will mark a new chapter as she becomes the first-ever holder of the Gregory and Ania Coffey Professorship in Economics.
A Trailblazer in Global Economics
Born in Kolkata in 1971, Gopinath earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Delhi, followed by advanced degrees from the Delhi School of Economics and Princeton University. As an Indian-American economist, her ascent in global policy circles has been widely recognized and celebrated.
Her leadership and research have focused on international finance, exchange rates, sovereign debt, and emerging markets—areas that gained particular significance during recent global crises.
