New Delhi: India is increasing its rare-earth magnet capacity to reduce dependence on foreign supplies and strengthen its manufacturing ecosystem. Speaking at the Kautilya Economic Conclave 2026, Principal Secretary-2 to the Prime Minister, Shaktikanta Das, said the government is taking major steps to build domestic capabilities in this critical sector.

Rare-earth permanent magnets are essential components used in automobiles, electronics, renewable energy systems, defense equipment, and several advanced technologies. The government believes that developing local manufacturing capacity will improve supply chain security and support long-term industrial growth.

Why Rare-Earth Magnets Are Important

Rare-earth magnets are among the strongest permanent magnets available today. They are widely used in:

  • Electric vehicles (EVs)
  • Consumer electronics
  • Industrial motors
  • Wind turbines
  • Defense systems
  • Semiconductor equipment

Because many manufacturing sectors depend on these magnets, any disruption in supply can affect production across industries.

Backbone Of Modern Technology

Modern technologies require high-performance magnetic materials for efficiency and miniaturization. As India expands its manufacturing ambitions, securing a stable supply of rare-earth magnets has become a strategic priority.

Why India Rare-Earth Magnet Capacity is Expanding

Das pointed to earlier Chinese restrictions on rare-earth-related exports as an example of the risks associated with excessive dependence on a single supplier. According to his remarks, the restrictions highlighted how much of the global rare-earth magnet ecosystem is concentrated in China.

China remains the dominant player in rare-earth processing and permanent magnet manufacturing, giving it significant influence over global supply chains.

India’s Response To Supply Chain Risks

To address these vulnerabilities, the Indian government has launched initiatives aimed at developing domestic rare-earth magnet production. The goal is to create a stronger local supply chain that can support industries such as automotive manufacturing, electronics, clean energy, and defense.

India has also been working on broader critical minerals and manufacturing strategies to reduce import dependence and improve industrial resilience.

Industry Participation Increasing

Recent government initiatives have attracted interest from major companies seeking to establish rare-earth magnet manufacturing facilities in India. Industry participation is expected to help build a complete domestic ecosystem covering mining, processing, refining, and magnet production.

India Rare-Earth Magnet Capacity Expansion: China’s Export Controls Add Urgency

China expanded certain rare-earth export controls in recent years, covering additional rare-earth materials and magnet-related products. These developments have encouraged countries worldwide to diversify supply chains and invest in local production capabilities.

India’s efforts to boost rare-earth magnet capacity align with a broader strategy of achieving greater self-reliance in critical technologies and manufacturing inputs.

FAQs

Why Is India Investing In Rare-Earth Magnet Production?

India wants to reduce dependence on imports, strengthen supply chain security, and support key industries such as automobiles, electronics, renewable energy, and defense manufacturing.

What Are Rare-Earth Magnets?

Rare-earth magnets are powerful permanent magnets made using rare-earth elements such as neodymium and samarium. They are widely used in electric vehicles, electronics, defense equipment, and industrial machinery.

How Do China’s Export Controls Affect India?

China dominates the global rare-earth supply chain. Export restrictions can impact availability and prices worldwide, encouraging countries like India to develop domestic production capabilities and reduce supply risks.
