In a recent development, the government of Punjab instigated disciplinary proceedings against three senior IPS officers following an indictment order by the Apex court. The Supreme Court decided on the matter after examining the report submitted by the five-member ‘Indu Malhotra Inquiry Committee’ on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s security breach in 2022. After probing into the matter, the committee recommended that “major penalty” be granted to the concerned officers.
The IPS officers in question include the former Director General of Police (DGP) of Punjab, Mr. Siddharth Chattopadhyaya (1986 batch), former DIG of Faridkot, Mr. Inderbir Singh (2007 batch), and the former SSP of Ferozepur Mr. Harmanbir Singh Hans (2015 batch).
The issue unfolded when the convoy of Prime Minister Modi was stranded for over 30 minutes on a flyover while travelling by road from Bathinda airport to Ferozepur on January 5th, 2022. While the PM was stuck on the flyover, a crowd of approximately 300 protesters gathered at the end of the bridge, instigating the Special Protection Group to swerve the convoy back to the airport.
