New Delhi: In a significant step towards strengthening sustainable maritime innovation and international research collaboration, the Government of India has signed an agreement for the Smart Sea Project under the Indo-Canada Collaborative Industrial Research and Development (IC-CIR&D) Programme.
The agreement has been executed with a Goa-based private marine company, marking a major boost to India’s electric water transport and clean mobility ambitions.
The project is supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology and focuses on the development and demonstration of a 20-passenger electric boat, aimed at transforming inland and coastal water transport through low-emission, energy-efficient solutions.
What Is the Smart Sea Project?
The Smart Sea Project is a technology-driven initiative designed to promote environment-friendly maritime transportation in India.
At its core, the project aims to design, develop, and demonstrate an electric passenger vessel capable of operating efficiently in inland waterways and coastal regions.
Key Objectives of Smart Sea Project
According to official sources, the project will:
- Develop a 20-seater electric boat
- Reduce dependence on fossil fuels
- Lower carbon emissions and noise pollution
- Improve operational efficiency in water transport
- Support sustainable tourism and mobility
The initiative aligns with India’s broader push for green transport infrastructure and innovation-led industrial growth.
What is Indo-Canada Collaborative Industrial R&D Programme
The Indo-Canada Collaborative Industrial R&D Programme is a bilateral mechanism aimed at fostering joint innovation between Indian and Canadian industries, particularly in high-impact sectors such as clean technology, advanced manufacturing, and sustainable mobility.
Under this programme:
- Indian and Canadian partners collaborate on applied research
- Focus remains on commercially scalable technologies
- Emphasis is placed on industry-led innovation, rather than purely academic research
The Smart Sea Project represents a practical outcome of this framework, translating international cooperation into deployable green technology solutions.
What is the Importance of Smart Sea Project
India has been steadily expanding its inland water transport network as part of its logistics and sustainability strategy.
The Smart Sea Project complements national initiatives aimed at:
- Promoting eco-friendly waterways
- Reducing road and rail congestion
- Enhancing last-mile connectivity in coastal and riverine regions
Electric boats such as those proposed under the project are particularly suited for tourism hubs, island connectivity, pilgrim routes, and urban waterways, where noise reduction and emission control are critical.
