Srinagar: In a significant administrative development in the power sector, the Jammu and Kashmir Government has appointed IAS officer GP Singh Arora as the new Chairperson of the Technical Co-ordination Committee (TCC) for the Northern Region. Singh currently serves as the Managing Director of Jammu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (JPDCL).

The appointment underscores the government’s efforts to strengthen inter-state power coordination and ensure more efficient management of electricity distribution and grid stability across Northern India. The committee functions on behalf of the J&K Power Development Department (PDD).

Key Role in Power Sector Planning and Coordination

The Technical Co-ordination Committee (TCC) plays a critical role in facilitating technical deliberations, policy execution, and planning among power utilities and state transmission bodies of the Northern Region.

As Chairperson, GP Singh Arora will be responsible for coordinating with member states, addressing operational challenges, streamlining power distribution strategies, and ensuring the reliable integration of J&K’s power infrastructure with the broader Northern grid.

This includes matters related to grid management, energy forecasting, power scheduling, outage planning, and other crucial technical aspects that impact regional electricity stability.

Strengthening J&K’s Power Sector

The appointment is being seen as an important step in reinforcing Jammu and Kashmir’s representation in key decision-making forums of the Northern Regional Power Committee (NRPC). This enhanced role will enable J&K to actively participate in shaping power sector reforms, ensuring its unique energy needs are effectively addressed.

Officials from the Power Development Department highlighted that GP Singh Arora’s leadership will help J&K leverage modern technologies and best practices, particularly in areas like smart grid systems, renewable energy integration, and infrastructure modernization.

GP Singh Arora’s Experience and Vision

A seasoned bureaucrat, GP Singh Arora has played a pivotal role in driving reforms in the power sector of Jammu and Kashmir. As MD of JPDCL, he has spearheaded several initiatives aimed at improving power supply reliability, reducing losses, and enhancing consumer services.

His appointment as TCC Chairperson reflects the Centre and State’s confidence in his administrative and technical leadership, particularly at a time when the Northern Region is focusing on power sector modernization and grid resilience.

Boost to Regional Cooperation

The Technical Co-ordination Committee works closely with the Regional Power Committee and the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), ensuring that states coordinate effectively on operational and infrastructural issues.

With rapid growth in power demand and increased integration of renewable energy sources, effective coordination between states has become crucial. GP Singh Arora’s leadership is expected to bolster inter-state cooperation and improve overall power system efficiency in Northern India.
