GRSE Launches Advanced Double Lane Modular Steel Bridge in Kolkata in Record Seven Days

First-of-its-kind Class-70 Modular Steel Bridge on VIP Road, Lake Town, built for KMDA, sets new benchmark in rapid urban infrastructure and traffic decongestion
Indian Masterminds Stories

Kolkata: Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) has achieved a historic milestone by successfully fabricating and launching a 140-foot Advanced Double Lane Modular Steel Bridge (MSB) Class-70 at Lake Town on VIP Road, Kolkata, in a record time of just seven days.

The bridge was launched on January 16, 2026, for the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) to ease persistent vehicular congestion in one of the city’s busiest traffic corridors.

First-of-Its-Kind Advanced Modular Steel Bridge in Kolkata

This is the first instance in Kolkata where an Advanced Double Lane Modular Steel Bridge (MSB) Class-70 has been launched. The achievement is particularly noteworthy given the severe traffic constraints at the site, which required precise planning, rapid execution, and seamless coordination.

The successful completion within such a short timeframe has set a new benchmark for modular bridge construction in urban environments.

Engineered for Heavy Loads and Enhanced Durability

The newly launched bridge features a 7.50-metre-wide carriageway, which is double the width of an earlier Bailey Bridge constructed by GRSE across the Kestopur Canal. Designed using proprietary technology and advanced engineering, the bridge can facilitate vehicular loads of up to 100 metric tonnes, making it suitable for both civilian and heavy-duty traffic.

The structure has been provided with a galvanized surface finish, ensuring longer service life, corrosion resistance, and easier maintenance, especially in high-humidity urban conditions.

Expertise, Innovation, and Rapid Execution

GRSE credited the achievement to its team of expert engineers and dedicated taskforce, who successfully manufactured and launched the advanced version of the Bailey Bridge through meticulous workflow management and innovative design solutions.

The project highlights GRSE’s growing capability in delivering fast-track infrastructure solutions while maintaining high standards of safety, quality, and reliability.

Easing Traffic Congestion on VIP Road

With the commissioning of the new bridge, traffic flow along Lake Town–VIP Road is expected to improve significantly, providing relief to thousands of daily commuters and supporting smoother connectivity across the Kestopur Canal area.
