GRSE Signs MoU with K2 Cranes to Manufacture Marine and Defence Cranes under Atmanirbhar Bharat

Partnership aims to boost indigenous crane manufacturing, reduce imports, and support ‘Make in India, Make for the World’ initiative for domestic and global markets

Kolkata: Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd (GRSE) has taken another major step towards diversification and self-reliance by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with M/s K2 Cranes & Components Pvt Ltd for the design, development, and manufacture of marine, defence, and shipyard cranes along with related equipment.

The MoU was signed on January 28, 2026, strengthening GRSE’s efforts to expand its engineering capabilities beyond shipbuilding.

The agreement was signed by Cmde M S Ramesh Menon, IN (Retd), Chief General Manager (BB&DEP), GRSE, and Mr. M Udayakumar, Managing Director, K2 Cranes & Components Pvt Ltd.

The signing took place in the presence of GRSE’s senior leadership, including:

  • Cmde P R Hari, IN (Retd), Chairman & Managing Director
  • Cdr Shantanu Bose, IN (Retd), Director (Shipbuilding)
  • Capt (IN) P Sunilkumar (Retd), Director (Corporate Planning & Personnel)
  • Mr. Niranjan Bhalerao, Director (Finance)
    along with other senior officials from both organizations.

Supporting Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India

This partnership is aligned with the Government of India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat and ‘Make in India, Make for the World’ initiatives. The cranes and associated equipment developed under this MoU will be manufactured indigenously, helping reduce dependence on imports.

In addition to meeting domestic requirements, the collaboration also aims to serve international markets, enhancing India’s export potential in defence and marine engineering equipment.

Expanding Opportunities in Marine and Defence Engineering

Through this collaboration, GRSE and K2 Cranes will jointly explore new business opportunities in the marine, defence, and shipyard crane segment, both in India and overseas. The initiative is expected to create profitable avenues while strengthening India’s industrial and defence manufacturing ecosystem.

GRSE’s Growing Engineering Portfolio

While warship building remains GRSE’s core strength, the company has steadily expanded into engineering products. GRSE is the largest manufacturer of modular steel bridges in India, having delivered over 5,900 bridges to clients across India and abroad.
