Kolkata: In a major move to strengthen India’s indigenous shipbuilding capabilities, Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) Ltd and Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Monday to form a consortium. The partnership aims to jointly participate in a large-scale, strategically important shipbuilding programme tendered by the Shipping Corporation of India Limited (SCI).
Strategic Partnership to Boost National Shipbuilding
The MoU formalizes the intent of both shipyards to collaborate on the construction of advanced maritime platforms, contributing to India’s long-term operational capabilities. By combining their expertise, the consortium aims to enhance the country’s maritime infrastructure and ensure greater technological self-reliance in shipbuilding.
The agreement was signed by Cdr Shantanu Bose, IN (Retd.), Director (Shipbuilding), GRSE, and Capt Ganti Venkateswarlu, IN (Retd.), Officiating Chairman & Managing Director, HSL, in the presence of senior officials from both organizations.

Enhancing Maritime Infrastructure and Technological Self-Reliance
This collaboration is designed to strengthen India’s maritime capabilities by leveraging the complementary strengths of both shipyards. The partnership aligns with the national vision of ‘Atmanirbharta’ (self-reliance) in critical defense and commercial sectors, ensuring that India can independently develop and deploy advanced maritime platforms.
By pooling resources, technical expertise, and operational experience, GRSE and HSL aim to improve long-term operational readiness and maintain high standards of safety, quality, and innovation in shipbuilding.

The consortium model allows both shipyards to optimize their distinct capabilities and infrastructure. GRSE brings decades of expertise in warship construction and diversified engineering solutions, while HSL contributes its proficiency in large-scale shipbuilding and maintenance. Together, the collaboration strengthens India’s ability to deliver sophisticated maritime assets efficiently and reliably.

Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) Ltd:
Established in 1884, GRSE is a leading defense public sector shipbuilder under the Ministry of Defence. It was the first Indian shipyard to construct a warship, INS Ajay, for the Indian Navy in 1961. GRSE operates four distinct shipyards, has delivered over 800 platforms, including 115 warships, and also manufactures prefabricated steel bridges and 30mm naval guns.
Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL):
