Kolkata: Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE), a Navratna Defence Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Defence, Government of India, has secured a ₹1,032 crore contract from Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) for the design, construction and delivery of four Platform Supply Vessels (PSVs).

GRSE received the Notification of Award (NOA) from ONGC on July 30, 2026. The contract marks a significant expansion of GRSE’s shipbuilding portfolio and strengthens its presence in India’s commercial and offshore vessel market.

The project is expected to support the country’s offshore energy infrastructure while contributing to India’s efforts towards self-reliance in advanced maritime manufacturing.

Advanced PSVs to Support Offshore Operations

The four vessels will be designed and constructed in accordance with the rules of the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS).

The vessels will have the following specifications:

  • Overall length: Approximately 80 metres
  • Beam: Approximately 20 metres
  • Deadweight capacity: 3,000 tonnes

The vessels will be capable of carrying out a wide range of offshore logistics and support missions associated with exploration and production activities.

Hybrid Propulsion System to Improve Efficiency

One of the major highlights of the vessels will be their advanced hybrid propulsion architecture.

The propulsion system will feature:

  • Electrically driven azimuth thrusters.
  • Lithium-Ion Battery Energy Storage System.
  • Peak load management capability.
  • Spinning reserve support.
  • Dynamic positioning operations.
  • Emergency response functions.

The hybrid propulsion technology is expected to improve the operational efficiency of the vessels while helping reduce their environmental impact.

Order Strengthens GRSE’s Commercial Shipbuilding Portfolio

The ONGC contract marks an important step in GRSE’s diversification strategy. While the shipyard has a strong track record in building warships for India’s defence forces, the latest order strengthens its capabilities in the commercial and offshore vessel segment.

The project is expected to:

  • Support India’s offshore energy infrastructure.
  • Strengthen domestic shipbuilding capabilities.
  • Expand GRSE’s presence in commercial shipbuilding.
  • Promote indigenous maritime manufacturing.
  • Provide technologically advanced solutions for offshore operations.

The order also reinforces India’s broader focus on developing domestic capabilities in strategic maritime and energy sectors.

GRSE’s Six Decades of Shipbuilding Experience

With more than six decades of shipbuilding experience, GRSE has built and delivered over 800 platforms, including 118 warships, for the Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard and friendly foreign countries.

The latest order from ONGC adds another major project to the company’s growing portfolio and demonstrates its ability to deliver advanced, efficient and environmentally sustainable maritime platforms.

The project is also expected to contribute to India’s growing offshore energy ecosystem by providing specialised vessels required for offshore exploration and production activities.
