New Delhi: India’s captive and commercial coal mining sector continued its strong growth trajectory in July 2026, recording a 9.61 per cent year-on-year increase in coal production while maintaining robust dispatch levels. According to the Ministry of Coal, production reached 14.78 million tonnes (MT) during the month, while coal dispatches stood at 17.49 MT, reflecting improved operational efficiency and the sector’s growing contribution to the country’s domestic coal output.

The Ministry said the sustained growth reinforces the growing role of captive and commercial coal mines in India’s coal ecosystem while strengthening energy security, reducing dependence on imported coal and supporting industrial demand.

Production and Dispatch Continue Upward Trend

Coal production from captive and commercial mines reached 14.78 MT in July 2026, registering a 9.61 per cent increase compared to the corresponding month last year.

The year-on-year growth reflects the increasing contribution of these mines to India’s domestic coal output.

Coal dispatches during the month stood at 17.49 MT, indicating continued improvements in mine productivity and supply chain efficiency. The Ministry attributed the positive performance to better utilisation of mining capacities and enhanced operational efficiency across the sector.

Growing Contribution to Domestic Coal Supply

The Ministry noted that captive and commercial coal mines are playing an increasingly important role in India’s coal ecosystem by strengthening domestic production and ensuring reliable coal availability for key industries.

The consistent rise in production is expected to:

  • Reduce dependence on imported coal.
  • Strengthen supply chain resilience.
  • Conserve valuable foreign exchange.
  • Enhance domestic coal availability.
  • Support India’s energy security.

Officials said the sector’s performance aligns with the Government’s vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat by promoting self-reliance in a critical raw material that powers industries and electricity generation across the country.

Focus on Operational Efficiency

The Ministry attributed the sector’s performance to continued improvements in operational efficiency, enhanced mining productivity and more effective utilisation of mining capacities.

These gains have enabled captive and commercial mines to sustain production growth while meeting rising demand from industrial consumers.

Ministry to Sustain Growth Momentum

Reaffirming its commitment to the sector, the Ministry of Coal said it will continue efforts to unlock the full potential of captive and commercial coal mining through progressive policy interventions, robust regulatory oversight and continued stakeholder support.

The Ministry also said it will focus on addressing supply-side constraints, sustaining production growth and improving coal availability to meet the country’s growing energy and industrial requirements.

With production and dispatch maintaining an upward trajectory, captive and commercial coal mines are expected to play an increasingly important role in strengthening India’s coal ecosystem and meeting the nation’s growing energy and industrial requirements.
