Ahmedabad: In a major infrastructure push, the Gujarat government has launched an ambitious coastal highway project to connect the port cities of Surat and Bharuch. The ₹356 crore project is expected to significantly improve connectivity, reduce travel distance, and boost industrial growth in South Gujarat.
18 KM Coastal Highway to Transform Connectivity
The project involves the construction of an 18-kilometre-long, four-lane coastal highway. Once completed, the distance between Surat and Bharuch will reduce from 55 km to nearly 40 km, cutting travel time by up to 30 minutes.
This initiative aligns with the vision of Narendra Modi to strengthen coastal connectivity and infrastructure across India.
Ports Connectivity to Boost Trade and Industry
The new coastal route will connect key ports, including Hazira Port and Dahej Port, enabling smoother movement of goods and reducing logistics costs.
Improved port connectivity is expected to:
- Accelerate industrial development
- Enhance export-import efficiency
- Strengthen Gujarat’s position as a major maritime hub
Project Launched in Olpad Region
The construction work officially began in Pardi Jakhri village in the Olpad area of Surat. The project was inaugurated by local MLA and former minister Mukesh Patel.
The highway will pass through the coastal belt of Olpad, directly linking several villages such as Dandi, Mor, Nes, and Bhagwa.
Bridges and Infrastructure Development Planned
To ensure seamless connectivity, bridges will be constructed over the Sena Khadi creek and the Kim River. These additions will make the route more efficient and reliable for both passenger and cargo movement.
Economic and Tourism Growth Expected
The coastal highway is designed as a multi-purpose infrastructure asset. Apart from improving transportation, it is expected to:
- Generate employment opportunities
- Boost local businesses
- Promote tourism in coastal regions
With Gujarat’s extensive 1,630 km coastline, this project is seen as a game-changer for regional socio-economic development.
Reduced Travel Time and Fuel Savings
Currently, travel between coastal areas like Dandi and Kantiyajal takes around 1.5 hours. The new highway will significantly cut travel distance and time, leading to fuel savings and faster movement of goods and people.
A Strategic Infrastructure Leap
This coastal highway project marks a significant step toward modernizing Gujarat’s infrastructure. By linking key ports and improving road connectivity, the state is set to witness faster economic growth and enhanced regional integration.
