Gujarat: Gujarat is rapidly progressing towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a Tuberculosis-Free India, achieving an impressive 94% of the ambitious TB registration and treatment targets set by NITI Aayog. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, the state has become a national frontrunner in the fight against TB, according to a recent press release from the Gujarat Health Department.
Record TB Case Detection and Treatment
Against a target of identifying 1,40,000 TB cases, Gujarat successfully registered 1,31,801 individuals. Importantly, the state ensured that detection led directly to treatment:
- 1,25,301 patients were enrolled in active treatment programs
- 1,21,912 patients completed their treatment successfully
- This marks a clinical recovery rate of 91.74%, showcasing Gujarat’s robust TB management system
These results demonstrate the state’s end-to-end healthcare approach, from early detection to complete treatment.
Financial and Nutritional Support for TB Patients
Recognizing that TB treatment often places a financial burden on patients, the Gujarat government has provided extensive economic and nutritional support.
- In 2025 alone, the government disbursed ₹49.10 crore to 92,921 TB patients
- Under the Nikshay Poshan Yojana, patients receive a ₹1,000 monthly stipend to support nutritional health during treatment
This financial assistance ensures that patients can complete their treatment without disruption due to economic hardship.
Community-Driven Support Strengthens TB Fight
Gujarat has also mobilized a strong community network to aid TB patients:
- 31,058 Nikshay Mitras (community volunteers and sponsors) registered on the national portal
- 10,682 active volunteers distributed over 4.49 lakh nutrition kits
- This makes Gujarat the best-performing state in community-driven nutritional support for TB patients
Community participation, coupled with government initiatives, has been a key factor in improving treatment adherence and patient recovery rates.
Proactive Screening and Early Detection
Rather than waiting for patients to seek help, Gujarat launched door-to-door and community screening efforts as part of the 100-Day Intensive TB Eradication Campaign starting December 2024.
- As of March 20, 75.39 lakh people have undergone TB screening
- 1,63,426 new patients were identified and seamlessly enrolled into treatment programs
This proactive approach prevents the disease from spreading and ensures patients receive timely medical care.
Gujarat Sets a Model for TB Eradication
Through a combination of clinical efficiency, financial safety nets, community involvement, and early detection, Gujarat has established a replicable model for TB elimination. The state’s achievements highlight the potential for scalable, sustainable solutions in public health, aligning with India’s vision of a TB-free nation.
Gujarat’s approach demonstrates how government leadership, community engagement, and targeted healthcare initiatives can combine to deliver remarkable outcomes in disease eradication.
