In a move aimed at ensuring continuity in top-level police leadership, the Andhra Pradesh government has extended the service of senior IPS officer Harish Kumar Gupta by two years, officially appointing him as the Director General of Police (DGP) for a fixed tenure.
A 1992-batch IPS officer, Gupta was set to superannuate in August 2025, but the state has exercised its discretion under Supreme Court guidelines to grant him an extension. These guidelines allow a two-year fixed term for DGPs recommended by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
Formal Appointment After UPSC Panel Review
Gupta, who had been serving as DGP in full additional charge since February, also holds the posts of Director General, Vigilance and Enforcement, and Ex-officio Principal Secretary to the Government in the General Administration (V&E) Department.
Following a formal proposal by the Andhra Pradesh government, the UPSC empanelment committee convened on April 30 in New Delhi to scrutinize eligible officers for the top post. After evaluating the service records of all shortlisted candidates, the state government selected Gupta based on merit and administrative suitability.
Extension Comes with Conditions
As per norms, Gupta’s appointment is valid for two years from the date of assumption, unless curtailed for specific reasons, including disciplinary action, criminal conviction, incapacity, mutual reassignment, or other recorded administrative reasons.
Continuity During Crucial Reform Phase
The extension of Gupta’s service beyond the retirement age is a rare administrative decision and reflects the government’s intent to maintain stability in law enforcement leadership as it prepares for major reforms in policing, public safety, and enforcement systems.
