IAS Suhas LY Wins Silver in Dubai Open 2023, Shines the Spotlight on India Once Again

Tokyo Paralympics silver medalist Suhas LY, an IAS officer of 2007 batch, has once again made India proud at the international level. He won the men’s singles silver medal in ‘BWF Dubai Open 2023’ in men’s singles SL-4 category. He showed his brilliant performance in the International Para Badminton tournament held in Dubai and reached the final after winning 4 matches in a row. However he lost the final against Malaysia.

Mr. Suhas is currently posted as Secretary in Sports Ministry, Uttar Pradesh. He is India’s first IAS officer to win a medal at the Paralympics. He is currently number 2 in World Ranking of Para Badminton players, in his category. While in India, he is number 1.

He has won silver medal and bronze medal in the last two Para Olympics. His aim is to win a gold medal for the country in the upcoming Para Olympics.

In the Dubai Para Badminton International Tournament and the 13th qualifying tournament of Paris Paralympics, Indian shuttlers performed brilliantly and won a total of 14 medals, including one gold, five silver and 8 bronze medals.

Suhas LY has won medals in many international tournaments including Tokyo Paralympics. He won the Gold Medal in the Para Asian Games 2023, held in China in October this year.

A Computer Engineering graduate from the National Institute of Technology, Suratkal, Karnataka, Mr. Suhas has served as the District Magistrate of Gautam Buddh Nagar and Aazamgarh in UP. He hails from Karnataka and was born to late Yathiraj L K and Jayashree C S in Hassan in Karnataka.

During the pandemic, the UP government had sent Suhas LY as the District Magistrate to Gautam Buddha Nagar in 2020. Before this, he had been the District Magistrate of Maharajganj, Sonbhadra, Hathras, Prayagraj, Jaunpur and Azamgarh.

He became National Champion after winning gold medal in Men’s Singles category at second National Para Badminton Championships held in Varanasi in March 2018.

He is the only IAS officer in India to win a Paralympic medal and an Arjuna Award. He has been honored with the Laxman Award by UP government. His ranking is number one in the country and number two in the world.

He is preparing for the Para Olympics to be held next year. His aim is to win a gold medal for the country this time.

He has also won many awards in his official capacity. He has been awarded for his performances by Governor of Uttar Pradesh for his duties related to elections, and by the Revenue Minister and Chairman, Board of Revenue, for duties regarding revenue administration.
