Mr. K Gopalakrishnan, a 2013-batch IAS officer who was suspended for allegedly creating a WhatsApp group exclusively for Hindu bureaucrats, received a major reprieve as the police inquiry found no legal grounds to register a case against him.
The preliminary inquiry, conducted by Narcotic Cell ACP Aji Chandran Nair, concluded that Gopalakrishnan did not share any polarizing content in the group. Moreover, no members of the group lodged complaints against him. The report, submitted to City Police Commissioner G Sparjan Kumar (2002-batch IPS officer), cited multiple Supreme Court rulings to support its findings.
The investigation began after a Congress leader from Kollam filed a complaint, prompting the district government pleader to opine that legal action could be considered. However, the police found no basis to proceed with the case.
The state government had earlier suspended Officer Gopalakrishnan, accusing him of violating the All India Services (Conduct) Rules by allegedly attempting to create communal divisions among civil servants. A charge memo was issued by Chief Secretary Sarada Muraleedharan (1990-batch IAS officer), asking the officer to respond to the allegations within 30 days.
The controversy stemmed from Mr. Gopalakrishnan’s alleged creation of a WhatsApp group named “Mallu Hindu Off,” with only Hindu bureaucrats as members.
