1988 batch IAS officer Nitin Kareer has been appointed as the new Chief Secretary of Maharashtra. He was the additional chief secretary (finance).
57-year-old Dr Kareer will succeed 1987 batch senior IAS officer Manoj Saunik. The Maharashtra government issued an order regarding this.
The Eknath Shinde led state government had sent a proposal to the Central Government to extend the tenure of Mr. Manoj Sainik. But, due to it not getting approval, Mr. Nitin Kareer has been appointed as the new Chief Secretary of the state.
Mr. Kareer’s tenure will be for three months as he will retire on 31 March 2024. But, he may get an extension, in view of the Lok Sabha elections in coming months.
1987 batch IAS officer Sujata Saunik may get a chance after his tenure. She is currently looking the MD of Maharashtra Metro.
Nitin Kareer has previously worked in various departments of Maharashtra government.
He hails from Maharashtra. He obtained his MBBS degree from B J Medical College in Pune and, thereafter, earned a Master’s degree in finance.
After joining Maharashtra cadre in 1988 of the Indian Administrative Service, he started his career as the Chief Executive Officer of Pune Zilla Parishad.
He also held posts like District Collector of Sangli, Pune, Director General of Information and Public Relations, Director General of Registration, Commissioner of Pune Municipal Corporation, Divisional Commissioner of Pune, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, Sales Tax Commissioner, and Jamabandi Commissioner.
