New Delhi: In a momentous development for India’s agricultural and cooperative sectors, Dr. Udai Shanker Awasthi, the long-serving Managing Director and CEO of Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited (IFFCO), retired today after 40 years of transformative leadership and over 48 years of dedicated service to the organization. His retirement at the age of 80 marks the culmination of a legacy that has shaped not only IFFCO, but the entire cooperative movement in India.

From a Domestic Entity to a Global Fertiliser Giant
Dr. Awasthi joined IFFCO in 1976 and went on to become its Managing Director in 1993, a position he held for an unprecedented 32 years. A chemical engineer from Banaras Hindu University, he is credited with turning IFFCO into the world’s largest fertiliser cooperative based on GDP contribution, as recognized by the World Cooperative Monitor (WCM).
Under his leadership, IFFCO evolved from a domestic fertiliser producer into a global agrochemical force, establishing joint ventures and strategic partnerships in countries like Oman, Jordan, Senegal, and the UAE, including:
- OMIFCO (Oman)
- JIFCO (Jordan)
- Kisan International Trading (KIT)
- Strategic Diversification for Rural Empowerment
- Dr. Awasthi expanded IFFCO’s footprint beyond fertilisers to include:
- IFFCO Tokio General Insurance (with Japan’s Tokio Marine)
- IFFCO-MC Crop Science (with Mitsubishi Chemicals)
- IFFCO Bazar (agri e-commerce)
- IFFDC (agro-forestry)
Kisan Logistics, Kisan Finance, and Kisan Suvidha
Each venture was designed to empower rural India by creating integrated platforms for insurance, credit, logistics, and agri-tech services.

Nanotech Pioneer: A New Era in Indian Agriculture
Among Dr. Awasthi’s most celebrated contributions is the introduction of nanotechnology in Indian agriculture. He founded the Nano Biotechnology Research Centre in Kalol and spearheaded the launch of IFFCO Nanoventions Pvt. Ltd., which led to the development of:
- Nano Urea Plus
- Nano DAP
- Nano Zinc
- Nano Copper
These next-generation, eco-friendly fertilisers are now manufactured at IFFCO plants in Kalol, Kandla, Aonla, Phulpur, and Paradeep, with new facilities emerging in Bengaluru, Deoghar, and Assam.

Dr. Awasthi’s work has earned him both national and international acclaim:
- Rochdale Pioneers Award from the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA)
- Designated “Fertiliser Man of India” by Shakar Bharati and RSS leader Dattatreya Hosbole
