Food Testing Comes to Your Doorstep: India Launches First Mobile Lab Accreditation Scheme

NABL scheme aims to bring reliable food testing closer to communities while strengthening food safety and regulatory coordination
Indian Masterminds Stories

New Delhi: India has launched its first accreditation scheme for mobile food testing laboratories, aiming to make reliable and quality-assured food testing services more accessible to communities.

The scheme was launched by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL), a constituent board of the Quality Council of India (QCI), during the ‘Gunvatta Samanvaya – A Multilateral MoU Exchange Ceremony’ in New Delhi.

Mobile Labs to Take Food Testing Closer to Communities

The new NABL accreditation framework will allow mobile food testing laboratories to provide testing services beyond conventional laboratory settings.

The initiative is expected to help:

  • Strengthen food safety surveillance
  • Improve access to quality testing
  • Support faster regulatory action
  • Increase consumer confidence in food quality

By taking accredited testing facilities closer to communities, the scheme could make food safety monitoring more accessible across different locations.

Multilateral MoU Pushes Regulatory Coordination

The event also featured a Multilateral MoU Exchange involving organisations associated with the Integrated Assessment Framework.

The collaboration focuses on improving coordination and reducing duplication in assessment processes.

It aims to:

  • Promote regulatory harmonisation
  • Encourage mutual recognition
  • Improve assessment efficiency
  • Support ease of doing business
  • Maintain strong quality and compliance standards

The initiative brings participating organisations together to strengthen India’s integrated quality infrastructure.

DPIIT Highlights Quality-Led Growth

DPIIT Secretary Amardeep Singh Bhatia stressed the importance of building quality across the entire value chain.

He said initiatives such as Gunvatta Samanvaya can support India’s development journey towards 2047 by encouraging quality-led practices.

NABL Chairperson Dr Sandip Shah highlighted the importance of the new accreditation scheme and collaborative assessment mechanisms.

QCI Calls for Greater Collaboration

QCI Secretary General Chakravarthy T. Kannan emphasised collaboration, convergence and mutual trust as key to building a stronger quality ecosystem.

He said the Gunvatta Samanvaya initiative and mobile food testing accreditation scheme would help take quality-assured testing services closer to communities.

The launch marks another step towards strengthening India’s quality infrastructure, improving regulatory coordination and making food testing more accessible to people and businesses.

Strengthening India’s Quality Infrastructure

The launch brings mobile food testing into an accreditation framework while the multilateral MoU exchange seeks to improve coordination among participating organisations.

According to QCI and NABL, the initiatives are aimed at advancing collaborative quality systems, regulatory efficiency and stakeholder confidence, while strengthening India’s overall quality infrastructure.
