IAF Plans Massive Stealth Drone Push: Up to 500 Ghatak, CATS Warrior and ALFA-S Aircraft Reported

The Indian Air Force is reportedly considering a future fleet of up to 500 unmanned combat aircraft involving technologies linked to Ghatak, CATS Warrior and ALFA-S.

New Delhi: The Indian Air Force stealth combat drones plan could become an important part of India’s future air-power strategy. Recent reports claim the IAF is considering a large unmanned combat fleet of up to 500 aircraft, potentially involving platforms such as DRDO’s Ghatak uav programme, CATS Warrior and ALFA-S. However, the figure of 500 has not been officially confirmed by the Ministry of Defence or IAF so far.

Official government information does confirm that India has been steadily developing key technologies needed for advanced autonomous and stealth unmanned aircraft.

Details of Indian Air Force stealth Combat Drones Procurement

According to a recent report highlighted by The Times of India, the IAF could eventually build a fleet of hundreds of unmanned combat aircraft designed to operate alongside manned fighters.

The reported concept includes different types of drones for different missions, including stealth penetration, collaborative combat and swarm operations.

Such a system could allow manned fighters and unmanned aircraft to work together during complex missions.

But there is an important distinction: the reported 350–500 aircraft requirement is not the same as an approved order for 500 Ghatak drones.

No official IAF, Ministry of Defence or DRDO statement found during verification confirms that India has placed an order for 500 Ghatak UCAVs.

What Is the Ghatak Stealth Combat Drone

Ghatak is commonly associated with India’s programme to develop an indigenous stealth Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle, or UCAV.

One of the most important technologies behind India’s future unmanned aircraft programme is DRDO’s Autonomous Flying Wing Technology Demonstrator.

DRDO successfully conducted its maiden flight at the Aeronautical Test Range in Chitradurga, Karnataka, on July 1, 2022.

The aircraft flew in fully autonomous mode and successfully demonstrated take-off, waypoint navigation and landing.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the demonstrator was designed and developed by DRDO’s Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) in Bengaluru. It uses a small turbofan engine.

DRDO Achieved Another Major Milestone in 2023

India’s flying-wing programme achieved another important breakthrough in December 2023. DRDO successfully flight-tested an indigenous high-speed Autonomous Flying Wing Technology Demonstrator in its final configuration at Chitradurga.

The Ministry of Defence described it as an autonomous stealth UAV and said India had joined a select group of countries that have mastered flying-wing control technology in a tailless configuration. The 2023 test followed the maiden flight in July 2022 and six additional trials using two prototypes.

Why Is the Flying-Wing Design Important

A flying-wing aircraft does not use the conventional body-and-tail arrangement seen on normal fighter aircraft. Its shape can be useful for reducing radar visibility, making the technology important for future stealth aircraft.

DRDO’s demonstrator uses a complex arrowhead-wing design and lightweight carbon composite materials developed in India.

The programme is therefore helping India gain experience in aerodynamics, autonomous flight, avionics, flight-control systems and low-observable aircraft technology.

Indian Air Force stealth Combat Drones Procurement: Drone Can Take Off and Land Autonomously

Another important feature demonstrated by DRDO is autonomous operation. During the December 2023 trial, the UAV demonstrated autonomous landing without requiring a pilot or ground radar infrastructure.

According to the government, onboard sensor fusion and India’s GAGAN satellite-based augmentation system helped improve navigation accuracy.

This type of technology could become important for future unmanned military aircraft that need to operate with limited human involvement.

Indian Air Force stealth Combat Drones Procurement: Where Do CATS Warrior and ALFA-S Fit

The reported IAF roadmap is broader than one large stealth drone. CATS Warrior is envisioned as a collaborative or “loyal wingman”-type unmanned aircraft that could work with manned combat aircraft.

ALFA-S, meanwhile, has been reported as an air-launched swarm concept involving smaller unmanned systems. Together, these concepts point towards a future battlefield where one human-controlled fighter could work with several unmanned platforms. However, publicly available official information about their final configuration, procurement numbers and induction schedules remains limited. Therefore, reported specifications and fleet numbers should be treated as provisional until formally announced.

What Is Manned-Unmanned Teaming

Manned-unmanned teaming, often called MUM-T, simply means piloted aircraft and unmanned aircraft working together during a mission.

For example, a fighter pilot could potentially receive information from drones operating farther ahead. Unmanned platforms could perform surveillance, electronic support or other high-risk missions while the manned fighter remains farther from heavily defended areas.

The exact capabilities would depend on the aircraft, sensors, weapons, communications and level of autonomy eventually approved for service.
