Kolkata: The Indian Navy on August 1 launched DSC A24 (Yard 329), the fifth and final vessel under the Diving Support Craft (DSC) Project, marking the successful completion of the programme aimed at enhancing the Navy’s underwater operational capabilities. The launch ceremony was held at the Titagarh Rail Systems Limited (TRSL) shipyard in Kolkata in the presence of Vice Admiral Gurcharan Singh, Chief of Personnel.

The vessel was ceremonially launched by Mrs Kamal Singh following long-standing naval traditions and was attended by senior officials of the Indian Navy and Titagarh Rail Systems Limited.

Fifth and Final Vessel of the DSC Project

DSC A24 is the fifth ship constructed under the Indian Navy’s Diving Support Craft Project, which is being executed by M/s Titagarh Rail Systems Limited (TRSL), Kolkata.

With the launch of DSC A24, the Navy has completed the entire five-vessel project designed to strengthen underwater support operations and improve maritime readiness.

Designed for Advanced Diving Operations

The Diving Support Craft has been designed with a catamaran-hull configuration and has an approximate displacement of 300 to 400 tonnes.

According to the Indian Navy, the design offers several operational advantages, including:

  • Superior stability
  • Enhanced deck area
  • Improved sea-keeping characteristics

These features make the vessels well suited for specialised diving operations in coastal and maritime environments.

The ships have been designed and constructed in accordance with the Naval Rules and Regulations of the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS), ensuring compliance with national naval standards.

Strengthening Operational Capabilities

The induction of the Diving Support Craft fleet is expected to significantly enhance the Indian Navy’s operational capabilities in several specialised areas.

The vessels will support:

  • Diving operations
  • Underwater inspection
  • Salvage assistance
  • Coastal operational deployment

The Navy said the new platforms will improve its ability to undertake underwater maintenance, inspection and rescue-related missions while strengthening overall maritime preparedness.

Boost to Aatmanirbhar Bharat

The project also reflects India’s growing emphasis on indigenous defence manufacturing.

According to the Navy, nearly 70 per cent of the main and auxiliary equipment installed onboard the Diving Support Craft has been sourced from indigenous manufacturers.

The DSC Project has therefore emerged as an important contributor to the Government of India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives in the defence sector, showcasing the increasing capability of domestic shipbuilding and defence industries.

With the successful launch of DSC A24, the Indian Navy has completed the five-vessel Diving Support Craft Project, further strengthening indigenous naval capability and specialised underwater operational support.
