New Delhi: In a landmark moment for India’s scientific community, Varsha Ashok Aglawe has assumed charge as the 54th Director General of the Geological Survey of India (GSI), becoming the first woman to head the country’s premier geoscientific organisation in its 176-year history.

She took charge on July 31, 2026, succeeding Asit Saha, who served as Director General from July 27, 2024, to July 31, 2026.

Her appointment marks a significant milestone not only for the Geological Survey of India but also for women in India’s scientific and technical institutions.

A Historic Appointment for India’s Premier Geoscientific Institution

Established in 1851, the Geological Survey of India (GSI), functioning under the Ministry of Mines, is India’s apex geoscientific organisation. It is responsible for:

  • Geological mapping across the country
  • Mineral resource assessment
  • Exploration of critical and strategic minerals
  • Geoscientific investigations
  • Providing scientific inputs for sustainable utilisation of mineral resources

For the first time since its establishment nearly two centuries ago, the organisation is being led by a woman.

More Than Three Decades of Geological Experience

Varsha Ashok Aglawe brings over 30 years of professional experience in geology and geoscience administration.

Before joining GSI, she worked with the Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM). She entered the Geological Survey of India in 1992 as a Geologist posted in Bengaluru and steadily rose through the ranks by serving in a wide range of scientific and administrative assignments.

During her distinguished career, she has served in the Central, Northern and Eastern Regions of GSI, besides holding key responsibilities at the organisation’s Central Headquarters.

Immediately before assuming charge as Director General, she was serving as:

  • Additional Director General & Head of Department, Eastern Region, Kolkata

Earlier, she also served as Deputy Director General, Policy Support System at GSI Headquarters.

Academic Excellence

Born in 1964, Ms Aglawe completed her Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Geology from the University of Calcutta, where she graduated with a Gold Medal, reflecting her academic excellence early in her career.

Internationally Recognised Scientist

She is widely regarded as an expert in palaeontology and palynology, specialising in the study of fossils, ancient life forms, pollen and spores.

Her research has significantly advanced scientific understanding of:

  • Late Cretaceous–Palaeocene sediments
  • K-T (Cretaceous–Paleogene) Boundary
  • Satpura-Gondwana sedimentary basins

One of her most notable scientific achievements was the identification of the Salbardi–Ghorpend region in Central India as a new dinosaur nesting site, adding an important chapter to India’s prehistoric fossil record.

Her research has also extended beyond India through collaborative palaeontological studies with the University of Michigan Museum of Paleontology, USA.

Strengthening GSI Through Science and Technology

Apart from field geology and research, Ms Aglawe has played an important role in strengthening the Geological Survey of India’s institutional and technological capabilities.

Among her key contributions are:

  • Establishing a state-of-the-art Palynology Laboratory at GSI’s Northern Region office in Lucknow.
  • Leading multidisciplinary geoscientific programmes across India.
  • Contributing to the development of GSI’s Online Core Business Integrated System (OCBIS).
  • Supporting mineral target identification using advanced geospatial technologies.

Representing GSI at the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) 2023 conference in Toronto as part of the Indian delegation.

Vision for the Future

As Director General, Aglawe is expected to steer GSI towards meeting India’s growing strategic mineral requirements while embracing modern geoscientific technologies.

Her priorities include:

  • Accelerating exploration of critical and strategic minerals
  • Expanding exploration of deep-seated and concealed mineral deposits
  • Enhancing offshore mineral exploration
  • Upgrading laboratory infrastructure
  • Promoting advanced geoscientific research
  • Strengthening geohazard assessment and mitigation
  • Training the next generation of geoscientists

These priorities align closely with India’s increasing focus on critical minerals required for clean energy, electric mobility and advanced manufacturing.

A Milestone for Women in Indian Science

Aglawe’s elevation as the first woman Director General of the Geological Survey of India represents a landmark achievement in the country’s scientific administration.

Leading an institution with nearly 176 years of history, she now shoulders the responsibility of guiding India’s premier geoscientific organisation at a time when mineral security, sustainable resource management and scientific innovation have become central to the nation’s development agenda.

With extensive experience spanning geology, mineral exploration, scientific research, technology integration and institutional leadership, Varsha Ashok Aglawe’s appointment marks a new chapter in the history of the Geological Survey of India.
