India’s coal production and dispatch registered steady growth in April 2025 compared to the same period last year, reflecting the sustained efforts of the Ministry of Coal and its subsidiaries to maintain supply consistency and operational efficiency across the sector.

According to provisional data, overall coal production in April 2025 stood at 81.57 million tonnes (MT), up from 78.71 MT recorded in April 2024. Production from captive and other private entities also saw a notable rise, reaching 14.51 MT in April 2025, compared to 11.46 MT during the same period last year. This increase underscores the growing role of captive mining in contributing to India’s total coal output.
Coal dispatch for the month also recorded a modest uptick, touching 86.64 MT in April 2025, up from 85.11 MT in April 2024.
As of April 30, 2025, coal stock held by coal companies surged to 125.76 MT, compared to 102.41 MT during the corresponding period last year. Coal India Limited (CIL), the country’s largest coal producer, reported a stockpile of 105 MT — a substantial 22.10% increase from 86.60 MT in the previous year. This represents an annual growth rate of 22.8%, showcasing the sector’s improved output and efficiency.
The Ministry of Coal reiterated its commitment to driving sustainable growth, enhancing domestic availability of coal, and reducing import dependence. With this strong performance, the coal sector continues to play a crucial role in fueling India’s economic expansion.
