New Delhi: India and Germany are set to deepen bilateral cooperation on environmental protection and climate action as the two countries convene the 4th Indo-German Environmental Forum in New Delhi on September 1, 2026.

Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav and German Federal Minister for Environment, Climate Protection, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety Carsten Schneider will co-chair the forum, which carries the theme ‘Together For More Resilience’.

The forum is the highest-level bilateral platform between India and Germany on environmental policy and has been held since 2008. It is being jointly organised by India’s Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) and Germany’s Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Protection, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN), in association with the Asia-Pacific Committee of German Business (APA) and Indian industry associations.

Four Key Areas on the Agenda

The discussions will bring together policymakers, industry representatives, think tanks and other stakeholders from both countries.

The thematic sessions will focus on:

  • Low-carbon industries and pathways towards cleaner industrial development.
  • Biodiversity conservation in wetlands, mountains and forests.
  • Resource efficiency and circular economy, including opportunities to develop circular models as viable businesses.
  • Sustainable finance, green skills and investment mobilisation to support the transition towards a greener economy.

The forum is expected to facilitate exchanges on environmental challenges, practical solutions and opportunities for greater collaboration between India and Germany.

Working Groups Set the Groundwork

Ahead of the forum, three India-Germany Joint Working Groups covering climate change, biodiversity and circular economy met during the year.

The groups discussed areas of mutual interest and the work undertaken so far, providing a foundation for further discussions at the ministerial-level forum.

Focus on Green Technology and Investment

The meeting comes against the backdrop of growing economic and industrial ties between India and Germany.

Both countries see scope for expanding cooperation in sustainable technologies, green industries and the wider green economy. The participation of government, businesses, experts and civil society organisations is expected to broaden the dialogue beyond government-to-government engagement.

The forum will therefore serve as a platform to explore how bilateral cooperation can translate into practical collaboration in areas such as cleaner industrial production, biodiversity protection, circular resource use and green investment.
