Alok Mohan Gets Addl. Charge As Karnataka DGP

Following the elevation of Karnataka Director General of Police (DGP) Praveen Sood as the Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the state government has announced that senior-most IPS officer Alok Mohan has been given the additional charge of the state’s top cop with effect from Monday (May 22).

Alok Mohan is currently the DGP and Commandant-General of Home Guards, Director of Civil Defence, Director General of Fire and Emergency Services and State Disaster Management.

The government also issued a notification relieving Mr Sood from the position on May 22.

Mr Mohan will be the in-charge as the state police chief until the newly formed government appoints a replacement.

A 1987 batch IPS from the Karnataka cadre, Mr. Mohan joined service at 22. An alumnus of IIT, Roorkie and Harvard University, USA, he holds degrees of MSc (Hons), MPhil and MPM (Master in Public Management). Mr Mohan is also a doctorate in the domain of India’s Internal Security. He has attended ‘Executive Management Programmes’ at various Indian Institute of Managements (IIMs).

He has many prestigious national and international medals to his name, including the President Police Medal for ‘Distinguished Service’ and President Police Medal for ‘Meritorious Service’, for outstanding services. While serving as a commander of the International Police Task Force (ITPF) in Bosnia-Herzegovina, he was awarded with the ‘UN Peace Medal’ for his outstanding contribution in the United Nations Peacekeeping Operations.

During his tenure as the DGP of the ‘Prisons and Correctional Services Department’, he was credited for bringing transformational changes in the prison administration through ‘Navachetana’ programme – an initiative to enhance the mental, physical, and emotional well-being of over 15,000 prisoners in 53 prisons across the state.
