In a recent development in the sensitive Dharmasthala mass grave case, IPS officer Soumyalatha has reportedly stepped down from the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed to investigate the allegations. While no official confirmation has been received by the state government, Home Minister G. Parameshwara acknowledged that non-official sources indicate Soumya Lata has submitted a resignation citing personal reasons. He assured that a replacement officer will soon be appointed to continue the probe.
Background: The Dharmasthala Mass Grave Allegations
The case surfaced after an individual wrote a letter to the police claiming that several bodies were clandestinely buried in Dharmasthala, a prominent pilgrimage site in Dakshina Kannada district, famous for the worship of Lord Manjunath. The informant appeared before the Beltangady court and gave testimony before the magistrate, confessing his involvement in burying multiple bodies in and around the area under undisclosed pressures.
Following the complaint, the local police initiated a preliminary investigation. According to Home Minister Parameshwara, the investigation is based mainly on the statements of a former sanitation worker who alleged he had buried hundreds of bodies at the site.

Official Response and Investigation Status
Addressing the issue publicly, Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara stated that while the preliminary inquiry is underway by the local police, the government is prepared to form a formal SIT if the need arises. “If further investigation is necessary, the government will take a decision accordingly,” he said.
When asked about the withdrawal of IPS officer Soumyalatha from the SIT, Parameshwara said, “I have not received any official communication on this matter, but according to non-official sources, she has written a letter requesting to leave the investigation team due to personal reasons. Another officer will soon replace her.”
Questions Raised Over Investigation Approach
The case has triggered public curiosity and debate on the investigative process. Some critics question the delay in constituting a SIT despite serious allegations, asking why the local police are handling the investigation if the matter requires specialized scrutiny. The issue highlights the need for transparency and prompt action, given the gravity of the claims related to secret mass burials.
