Bengaluru: In a proud moment for Bihar, especially the people of Saran district, 1995-batch IPS officer Umesh Kumar Chaurasiya — originally from Chaurasia Naya Tola village in Sonpur block – has been promoted to the rank of Director General of Police (DGP) in Karnataka.
Mr Kumar, currently serving as the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP), has been appointed as the DGP, Recruitment.
This remarkable achievement marks a journey from a small village in Bihar to the topmost police position in one of India’s most developed states, inspiring youth across the country.
Early Life and Education: A Foundation of Values
Born in the humble village of Nayatola Chausia in Sonpur, Umesh Kumar was known as a brilliant, soft-spoken, and disciplined student. His late father, Ram Prasad Bhagat, served as an executive engineer in Bihar’s irrigation department and instilled strong values of duty and honesty in him. Initially completing an engineering degree, Umesh joined the Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS), but his desire to serve the nation led him to appear for the UPSC Civil Services exam, through which he entered the Indian Police Service (IPS) in the 1995 batch.
Career Journey: Challenges and Success Across States and Borders
Umesh Kumar’s policing career began in Karnataka, a state known for its communal sensitivities. Serving as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in industrial hubs like Penambur, he earned recognition for maintaining law and order effectively. His tenure as Superintendent of Police (SP) in Kodagu district saw him initiate sports and training programs aimed at bridging the gap between the police and the community.
His service extended beyond national borders as well, with a stint in Kosovo under the United Nations Peace Mission, reflecting his administrative competence and global perspective.
Return to Bihar: Upholding Justice in Sensitive Districts
In 2006, Chaurasiya was deputed back to Bihar, where he served as SP in sensitive districts including Bhojpur and Siwan. Known for his firm stance on crime, he played a pivotal role in curbing kidnapping, murders, and robberies. His efforts earned him the prestigious “Sonpur Mela Award” from the Bihar government, recognizing his contribution to law enforcement and public safety.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Umesh Kumar’s family background also resonates with public service. He is the son-in-law of former Governor Ganga Prasad Chaurasia and brother-in-law of MLA Sanjeev Chaurasia. However, his humility, integrity, and commitment to service remain his greatest strengths.
