New Delhi: In a significant development, Sanjay Kumar Jain, an IRTS officer of 1990 batch, has tendered his resignation from the post of Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) of the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC). The Ministry of Railways has formally approved the exit of Mr Jain.
With his exit, the process of identifying a new CMD is expected to begin soon, sources indicated.
According to official information, Mr Jain will be relieved from his responsibilities after completing the mandatory notice period, with his exit scheduled to take effect on July 20, 2026. Notably, he was otherwise due to retire from service on December 31, 2026, making his departure nearly six months ahead of superannuation.
However, the reasons behind his resignation remain unclear, and there has been no official confirmation from the government or IRCTC regarding the circumstances surrounding his departure.
Curtain Falls on Weeks of Speculation
The development brings clarity to a month-long phase of speculation within government and corporate circles regarding the future leadership of IRCTC, one of India’s most prominent public sector enterprises in the tourism, catering and online ticketing sectors.

The Ministry of Railways’ approval formally clears the way for Jain’s departure, ending uncertainty over his tenure at the helm of the railway PSU.
Uncertainty Surrounds Exit
According to sources, it is not yet known whether Jain stepped down voluntarily or was asked to resign before completing his tenure.
Despite widespread speculation, no formal statement has been issued confirming whether he has officially relinquished his responsibilities.
Exit Comes After Major Milestone for IRCTC
Mr Jain’s departure comes at a significant moment in IRCTC’s corporate journey.
In March 2025, IRCTC achieved a major milestone when it was elevated from Miniratna to Navratna status by the Government of India. The company was also upgraded from a Schedule ‘B’ Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE)to a Schedule ‘A’ CPSE, reflecting its growing financial strength and strategic importance.
The elevation to Navratna status granted the corporation greater operational and financial autonomy, enabling faster decision-making and enhanced investment capabilities.

Experienced Officer with Strong Administrative Background
A Chartered Accountant (CA) and an officer of the Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS), Mr Jain brought with him over three decades of experience in key government and public sector roles.
Before taking charge as CMD of IRCTC on February 14, 2024, he served as Principal Chief Commercial Manager (PCCM) at Northern Railway. Over the years, he has held several important positions across the railways and government ecosystem.
Key Leadership Roles Across Railways and Government
Jain’s career includes a range of senior assignments, reflecting his extensive administrative and commercial expertise.
His notable roles include:
- Principal Chief Commercial Manager, Northern Railway
- Group General Manager (North Zone), IRCTC
- Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Mumbai, Central Railway
- Joint Secretary in the Department of Public Enterprises under the Ministry of Finance
- Part-time Chairman & CEO of National Land Monetization Corporation Limited
During his tenure as DRM in Mumbai, he was associated with innovative initiatives such as the “Muck Special” train for sanitation and support for the first all-women-run station at Matunga.
Tenure at IRCTC and Focus Areas
As CMD of IRCTC, Jain focused on enhancing e-catering services, expanding the corporation’s tourism vertical, and improving passenger comfort. His leadership was seen as aligned with strengthening IRCTC’s commercial and service-oriented operations.
He had assumed charge with a tenure extending up to his superannuation in December 2026 or until further orders.
Speculation Persists Amid Lack of Official Clarity
While there had been unconfirmed reports in April 2026 suggesting a possible resignation, no official announcement had been made at the time. The current development has now intensified discussions, though clarity on the exact reasons remains elusive.
Observers note that an official statement from the government or IRCTC is expected to provide clarity on the situation in the coming days.
Government Likely to Initiate Appointment Process
With the CMD position now vacant, the government is expected to initiate the process of appointing a successor shortly. The selection of a new CMD will be crucial for maintaining operational continuity and steering IRCTC’s future growth.
A Key Public Sector Enterprise
IRCTC remains one of the most visible and profitable public sector undertakings under the Ministry of Railways. The corporation handles online railway ticketing, onboard catering services, packaged tourism products and bottled drinking water services under the Rail Neer brand.
Over the years, the PSU has emerged as a critical interface between Indian Railways and millions of passengers, while also maintaining a significant presence in the capital markets.
