Ranchi: Senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Amol Vinukant Homkar of the 2004 batch, Jharkhand cadre, is set to take charge as Inspector General (IG) in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) on central deputation. The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has formally communicated with the Jharkhand government, requesting his early release to enable him to assume the new responsibility at the central level.

Home Ministry Writes to Jharkhand Government

The Ministry of Home Affairs, in a letter dated 26 December, informed the Jharkhand government that the competent authority has accorded approval for the deputation of IPS officer Amol Vinukant Homkar to the CRPF. The letter specifically requested the state government to relieve him at the earliest, allowing him to take over as IG in the CRPF.

The deputation will be on a central deputation basis, a move seen as part of the Centre’s efforts to strengthen leadership in central armed police forces.

Current Posting in Jharkhand Police

At present, IPS Amol Vinukant Homkar is serving as Inspector General (IG), Railways, Jharkhand Police. Following his formal release from this position by the state government, he will proceed to assume his new assignment as Inspector General in the CRPF.

Recognized as a Dynamic Officer

Amol Vinukant Homkar is widely regarded as one of the most dynamic and effective officers in the Jharkhand cadre. He has earned a reputation for his firm handling of law and order situations and his leadership in challenging security environments, particularly in Naxal-affected regions of the state.

Key Role in Anti-Maoist Operations

During his tenure as IG Operations, Jharkhand Police, Homkar played a decisive role in intensifying and successfully executing anti-Maoist operations across the state. Under his leadership:

  • Maoist influence was eliminated from key strongholds such as Budha Pahar, Bulbul forest, Parasnath region, and the tri-junction areas of Jharkhand
  • Prashant Bose, a senior Maoist leader carrying a reward of ₹1 crore, was arrested
  • Prayag Manjhi alias Vivek, another Maoist with a ₹1 crore bounty, was neutralized in an encounter

His tenure was marked by accurate intelligence inputs, strong coordination, and effective field leadership, which significantly weakened Maoist networks in Jharkhand.

IPS Amol Vinukant Homkar brings with him extensive experience across multiple domains:

  • Cadre and Batch: Jharkhand cadre, 2004 batch
  • Experience: Law and order management, counter-insurgency operations, policing in Left Wing Extremism-affected areas, and administrative leadership
  • Recent Postings: IG Operations and later IG Railways, Jharkhand Police

His work in sensitive and high-risk areas has been acknowledged at the national level.

Awards and Recognition

For his exceptional contribution to internal security and anti-Naxal operations, Homkar has been awarded the Union Home Minister’s Medal for Excellence in Service on multiple occasions. These honors underline his consistent performance and impact in challenging operational roles.

Significance of CRPF Appointment

As of December 2025, the Ministry of Home Affairs has appointed Homkar as Inspector General in the CRPF, a move considered strategically important. His appointment is expected to strengthen the operational framework of the CRPF, particularly in areas related to internal security and anti-extremism operations across the country.

With his proven track record in counter-insurgency and operational command, his induction into the CRPF leadership is seen as a valuable addition to the force at a time when internal security challenges remain complex.

Awaiting Formal Relieving from State Government

The final step now rests with the Jharkhand government, which is expected to formally relieve him from his current posting following the MHA’s request. Once relieved, IPS Amol Vinukant Homkar will officially take charge as IG, CRPF, marking a new chapter in his distinguished policing career.
