Ranchi: Around one lakh trees across 700 villages in Jharkhand will receive rakhis on Friday, Raksha Bandhan, as part of a forest department initiative aimed at strengthening community participation in tree protection.
The initiative is being organised under the ‘Ped Bachao’ (Save Trees) campaign, which will run for a month across selected villages in all 24 districts of the state.
Campaign Targets Three Lakh Trees
According to Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) Sanjeev Kumar, the campaign has set a target of tying rakhis to around three lakh trees across the identified villages during the month-long programme.

The first programme will be held at Jorad village in Gumla district, where Kumar will tie a rakhi to a tree to formally launch the initiative.

Focus on Community-Tree Bond
The initiative seeks to encourage an emotional connection between local communities and trees by using the traditional Raksha Bandhan ritual as a way of expressing a commitment towards protecting trees.
The campaign comes after Chief Minister Hemant Soren said during the state’s 77th Van Mahotsav this month that environmental protection is a collective responsibility.
The tree-rakhi initiative is being implemented as part of the forest department’s broader ‘Ped Bachao’ campaign, with activities planned in selected villages throughout the month.
