Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Police have attached properties belonging to two accused terrorists currently operating from Pakistan in Kupwara district under provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat, an IPS officer of 1992 batch, ordered the attachment of the properties located at Kachama in Kupwara. According to a police spokesperson, the attached properties comprise 15 kanals of land and two residential houses belonging to Abdul Majid Qureshi, son of Abdul Rouf Qureshi, and Parvaiz Ahmad Qureshi, son of Mohd Mustafa Qureshi, both residents of Kachama.
Properties Attached in Kachama
According to the police, Abdul Majid Qureshi’s property consists of 10 kanals and seven marlas of land along with a three-storeyed residential house.
Parvaiz Ahmad Qureshi’s property includes five kanals of land and a single-storeyed residential house.
The police said the properties are registered in the names of the accused terrorists and fall within the definition of “proceeds of terrorism” under Section 2(1)(g)(ii) of the UAPA.
The attachment has been carried out in connection with FIR No. 276/2022 registered at Police Station Kupwara.
Attachment Approved Under Section 25 of UAPA
The police spokesperson said prior approval had been obtained for attaching the properties under the powers conferred by Section 25 of the UAPA.
The case involves multiple provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) as well as the UAPA.
The FIR includes Sections 120B, 121, 121A, 122 and 123 of the IPC. It also invokes Sections 17, 18, 18A, 18B, 20, 38, 39 and 40 of the UAPA.
The police said the property action forms part of the proceedings arising from the 2022 case.
Action Against Terror-Linked Assets
The attachment prevents the properties from being dealt with or transferred in a manner contrary to the applicable legal proceedings.
The latest action comes as part of the authorities’ efforts to proceed against assets allegedly linked to terrorism cases under the legal framework provided by the UAPA.
The police have identified Abdul Majid Qureshi and Parvaiz Ahmad Qureshi as accused terrorists currently operating from Pakistan. The properties in Kachama have been proceeded against on the basis of the allegations and legal provisions invoked in FIR No. 276/2022.
Further proceedings in the case will be governed by the investigation and applicable legal process.
