Srinagar: The number of vacancies for the induction of Jammu and Kashmir Police Service (JKPS) officers into the Indian Police Service (IPS) is expected to rise from eight to ten, officials said, following the impending retirements of two senior IPS officers in April and May. This increase comes amid administrative delays in convening the final selection meeting by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
UPSC to Finalize Induction Soon
Official sources stated that while eight vacancies have already been identified and the necessary formalities – including consent from eligible JKPS officers – have been completed, the final induction process has been delayed due to the pending UPSC meeting.

The commission is expected to convene shortly with senior officials of the Union Territory, including the Chief Secretary, Home Secretary, and Director General of Police, to finalize the induction process for eligible officers.
Some JKPS Officers Prefer Promotion Within JKPS
Interestingly, some JKPS officers have reportedly declined induction into the IPS, opting instead to continue their career under the JKPS promotion framework. Under this policy, several officers have already been elevated to positions equivalent to DIG and IGP ranks, including Directors and Commissioners. Officials noted that one senior officer, recently promoted as Director under the JKPS promotion policy, is also set to retire this month. This post is likely to be filled as per seniority, contingent on the officer’s willingness for IPS induction.
Vacancy Overview and Historical Context
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the eight vacancies identified pertain to the years 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024, including carried-forward posts from previous years. Notably, no vacancy was allocated for 2022. Officers inducted into IPS will be allotted batches from 2015 onwards, depending on the availability of vacancies.
Over the past three years, around 44 JKPS officers have been inducted into the IPS. There were no inductions between 2011 and 2021 due to administrative and legal delays. Recent amendments to the Jammu and Kashmir Police Service Rules have further enabled the promotion of JKPS officers to senior ranks equivalent to DIG and IGP, helping ease stagnation caused by delays in IPS induction.
Balancing Career Growth and Administrative Requirements
The upcoming retirements in April and May are expected to create additional opportunities for JKPS officers aspiring to join the IPS, potentially raising the total number of vacancies to ten. While the induction process ensures integration into the IPS cadre, the JKPS promotion framework continues to offer a parallel path for career advancement, providing officers with multiple options for professional growth.
Officials emphasized that finalizing the IPS induction process promptly is crucial to maintaining administrative efficiency and ensuring that senior positions within the Jammu and Kashmir Police are filled by experienced officers, either through direct induction or internal promotions.
