Ladakh: The Ladakh High Court Bench has started regular hearings in Leh, marking an important step towards making justice more accessible to people in the Union Territory. On October 21, 2026, Chief Justice Pushpendra Singh Bhati and Justice Sanjay Parihar presided over the first regular Division Bench proceedings at the newly established facility, located more than 11,500 feet above sea level.
The hearings used a hybrid system, combining virtual and in-person proceedings. The development is expected to reduce the difficulties faced by litigants and lawyers who previously had to travel long distances to Srinagar or Jammu for High Court cases.
Ladakh High Court Bench Begins First Regular Hearings
The newly established Ladakh Bench of the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court began regular judicial hearings on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. The development followed its formal inauguration by Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant on October 18.
The Bench is located at Melongthang in Leh. Its establishment is an important step towards bringing higher judicial services closer to residents of Ladakh, particularly those living in remote and far-flung areas.
According to reports, the first sitting was led by Chief Justice Pushpendra Singh Bhati and Justice Sanjay Parihar. The proceedings marked the beginning of regular hearings at the new facility.
Division Bench Hears Five Cases On The First Day
The first Division Bench took up five listed matters on October 21. Chief Justice Bhati participated through virtual mode, while Justice Sanjay Parihar was physically present at the court in Leh.
After the Division Bench proceedings concluded, Justice Parihar heard 60 matters listed before the Single Bench. Together, the day’s schedule covered 65 matters concerning litigants from Ladakh.
The listing of these cases reflects the initial effort to organise judicial proceedings at the new Bench. However, the number of matters listed or heard should not be confused with the number of cases finally decided.
Ladakh High Court Bench: Hybrid Court Hearings Use Digital Technology
The first day’s proceedings used a hybrid hearing arrangement. This allowed the Chief Justice to participate virtually while Justice Parihar conducted hearings in person at Leh.
The use of technology is particularly important in Ladakh, where difficult terrain, long distances and challenging weather conditions can make travel difficult.
Digital court facilities can help improve coordination and allow judicial proceedings to continue even when physical travel is inconvenient. The new Bench is also part of a wider effort to improve access to justice through modern court infrastructure.
Why The Ladakh High Court Bench Is Important
Before the establishment of the Bench, litigants from Leh, Kargil and other remote areas often had to travel to Srinagar or Jammu to pursue matters before the High Court.
Such journeys could involve significant travel time, expenses and logistical difficulties. These challenges can be especially difficult for people who need to attend multiple hearings.
The new facility is expected to make access to High Court proceedings easier for local residents and lawyers. It also strengthens the presence of constitutional institutions in a geographically challenging region. However, the actual benefits will depend on the Bench’s functioning, the availability of hearings and the continued development of its judicial and digital facilities.
Chief Justice Of India Inaugurated The Bench On October 18
Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant formally inaugurated the Ladakh Bench at Melongthang, Leh, on October 18, 2026. According to the official Ladakh Administration, the inauguration was accompanied by the launch of important digital initiatives, including an e-Filing Portal and a Document Management System for the Bench.
The e-filing facility is intended to help advocates and litigants submit documents electronically. The Document Management System will support the digital handling of judicial records. The court complex also includes facilities such as a digitisation centre, filing counter and video-conferencing room. These arrangements are designed to support technology-enabled court proceedings.
