Bhopal: The Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly has passed the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, 2026, marking what Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav described as a historic moment in the state’s legislative history. The bill was passed on July 21, 2026, and will now be sent to the President of India for approval before it can become law.
Calling the day a “golden chapter” in Madhya Pradesh’s history, the Chief Minister said the legislation reflects the government’s commitment to equality, social justice, and constitutional values under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and the BJP leadership.
UCC Bill Passed by Madhya Pradesh Assembly
The Uniform Civil Code Bill was passed by the Madhya Pradesh Assembly through a voice vote.
Once the President grants assent, the legislation will officially come into force in the state.
According to the state government, the proposed law aims to establish a uniform legal framework governing personal matters across communities, replacing different personal laws with a common legal code.

Bill to Become Law After Presidential Approval
The Chief Minister said the bill will now be forwarded to the President of India for constitutional approval.
After receiving Presidential assent, the UCC will become applicable across Madhya Pradesh.
The government said the legislation seeks to ensure equal legal rights and responsibilities for all citizens under a common civil law.
CM Mohan Yadav Says Law Will Strengthen Women’s Rights
Speaking to the media after the bill was passed, Dr. Mohan Yadav said the legislation would strengthen women’s rights and promote gender equality.
According to the Chief Minister, the proposed law seeks to ensure:
- Equal inheritance rights for women and men.
- Equal legal provisions relating to adoption.
- Equal civil rights irrespective of religion.
- Legal protection for women through uniform civil provisions.
He said the legislation aims to ensure that women receive equal legal status in matters related to marriage, succession, adoption, and family rights.
Government Highlights Key Provisions of the Proposed UCC
The Chief Minister said that once the law comes into force:
- Bigamy would be treated as an offence under the uniform legal framework.
- Equal inheritance rights would apply to both men and women.
- Uniform legal provisions relating to adoption and family matters would be implemented.
- The law would establish common civil rules applicable across communities in matters covered by the legislation.
He said the objective is to provide equal legal protection and ensure fairness under a common civil code.
Strict Provisions on Misuse of Live-in Relationships
Dr. Mohan Yadav also stated that the proposed law contains provisions aimed at preventing the misuse of live-in relationships.
According to the Chief Minister, violations involving the misuse of live-in relationships under conditions specified in the proposed legislation could attract legal penalties, including imprisonment of up to five years, as provided in the bill.
He said the government is committed to implementing laws based on constitutional and moral principles.

The Chief Minister credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for encouraging reforms aimed at ensuring equality and social justice.He said the passage of the UCC Bill represents another major reform initiative and demonstrates Madhya Pradesh’s commitment to implementing progressive legal measures. According to Dr. Yadav, the legislation reflects the government’s vision of providing equal rights and justice to all citizens.
CM Says UCC Will Promote Equality and Constitutional Values
In a social media post after the bill was passed, Dr. Mohan Yadav described the day as a landmark moment for Madhya Pradesh.
He said the Uniform Civil Code would:
- Promote equal rights for all citizens.
- Strengthen women’s empowerment.
- Advance social justice.
- Reinforce constitutional values.
- Ensure equal legal treatment under a common civil framework.
The Chief Minister added that the legislation represents the government’s commitment to equality, justice, and inclusive governance.
Madhya Pradesh Awaits Presidential Assent
With the Madhya Pradesh Assembly approving the Uniform Civil Code Bill, the next step is Presidential assent. If approved by the President, Madhya Pradesh will formally implement the Uniform Civil Code, making it one of the states to adopt a common civil law framework.
The state government believes the legislation will strengthen gender equality, promote uniform legal rights, and reinforce constitutional principles across the state.
