Chennai/Bengaluru – Marking a significant step toward inclusive education and social equity, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has launched the HAL Endowment Scholarship Scheme at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IITM). This landmark initiative aims to provide long-term financial support to deserving students from economically weaker sections who are pursuing engineering degrees in core technical streams.
The Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to operationalize the scholarship was signed between Mr. Pradeep Kumar, General Manager (HR), HAL and Prof. Manu Santhanam, Dean-in-charge – Alumni and Corporate Relations, IIT Madras. The signing was witnessed by Dr. D. K. Sunil, CMD, HAL, along with Dr. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, Mr. M. G. Balasubrahmanya, Director (HR), HAL, Dr. S. D. Premkumar, Independent Director, HAL, and other senior officials from both institutions.
Bridging Dreams with Opportunity
The scholarship scheme reflects HAL’s firm belief in equitable access to quality education. As HAL CMD Dr. D. K. Sunil stated during the launch, “True progress begins with equal access. We believe that no student should be denied an opportunity at a premier institution like IIT Madras due to economic limitations.”
Through this initiative, HAL intends to unlock the potential of high-performing students from disadvantaged backgrounds and enable them to pursue engineering excellence without financial barriers.
A Sustained Commitment to Education
The scheme will provide financial assistance to 40 students over the next four years. Following this, 40 new students will be supported annually for 15 consecutive years. Eligible candidates include students enrolled in aeronautical, mechanical, electrical, and metallurgical engineering streams at IIT Madras.
By ensuring continuity and long-term funding, HAL is laying the groundwork for generational change—empowering future engineers who may otherwise struggle to afford such world-class education.
Nation-Building Through CSR
This endowment marks a significant addition to HAL’s CSR portfolio, which spans education, skill development, healthcare, environment, women’s empowerment, and sports. In the past five years alone, HAL has invested over ₹500 crore in socially impactful projects across India.
The HAL Endowment Scholarship Scheme not only upholds the spirit of academic inclusion but also sets a benchmark for how PSUs can directly contribute to human capital development. By nurturing talent at India’s top technical institutions, HAL is reinforcing its commitment to nation-building at the grassroots level.
