New Delhi: Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) Chairperson Mallika Srinivasan is likely to receive another one-year extension beyond November 18, 2025, according to sources familiar with the development.
The move, if confirmed, would mark her third consecutive term extension, reflecting the government’s continued confidence in her leadership of the body responsible for selecting top management in Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs).
A Rare Appointment that Broke Tradition
When Mallika Srinivasan was appointed PESB Chairperson in April 2021, she made history as the first-ever private sector leader to head the institution — a significant departure from the long-standing tradition of appointing retired civil servants to the post.
She succeeded Rajeev Kumar (Retd IAS: 1984: JH) and was initially appointed for three years or until the age of 65, whichever came earlier. Her term was first due to end on November 18, 2024, but was extended by a year through an administrative rule modification — and may now see another extension beyond November 2025.

Government’s Continued Confidence Despite Remote Functioning
Interestingly, Srinivasan has continued to function largely from Chennai, where she is based as the Chairman and Managing Director of Tractors and Farm Equipment Limited (TAFE). She rarely visits the PESB headquarters in New Delhi, instead managing operations and board reviews via online channels.
Despite this unconventional mode of functioning, sources say the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) are satisfied with her performance and are keen to retain her at the helm of PESB.
Leadership and Legacy: A Visionary Industrialist
Known as a visionary industrialist, strategist, and philanthropist, Mallika Srinivasan has been widely recognized for her contribution to Indian agriculture and manufacturing. Under her leadership, TAFE — one of the world’s largest tractor manufacturers — achieved revenues exceeding ₹10,000 crore and expanded into allied areas including diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and farm machinery.
She has held influential positions across several national and global forums — serving on the Global Board of the U.S.-India Business Council (USIBC), the Boards of AGCO Corporation (USA), and as a core member of the BRICS Women’s Business Alliance.
In 2023, she led the B20 India Task Force on Inclusive Global Value Chains, and continues to serve on the India-US CEO Forum and the Governing Body of Stella Maris College, Chennai.
Educational Background and Achievements
A gold medalist in Econometrics from the University of Madras, Srinivasan earned her MBA from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, where she was listed among the top 125 most successful alumni.
Her achievements have earned her numerous accolades, including the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year (2011), Fortune India’s Most Powerful Women in Business, ET Prime Businesswoman of the Year (2020), and the ABLF Woman of Power Award.
According to Forbes India’s 2024 list of 100 richest Indians, the Amalgamations Group family ranks 64th, with an estimated net worth of $5 billion.
A Philanthropic Force Beyond Boardrooms
Beyond corporate leadership, Srinivasan has been actively involved in philanthropy, supporting institutions such as Sankara Nethralaya, the Cancer Hospital in Chennai, and several rural healthcare and education projects in Tirunelveli district.
Through the Indira Sivasailam Foundation, she continues to promote Carnatic music and cultural preservation, reinforcing her family’s longstanding commitment to the arts.
What Lies Ahead
If the extension is formalized, Mallika Srinivasan will continue as PESB Chairperson until November 18, 2026, completing over five years in office — an exceptional tenure in the Board’s history.
Her leadership represents a unique blend of private-sector efficiency and public-sector governance, setting a precedent for future cross-sector appointments in India’s administrative ecosystem.
