Ranchi, Jharkhand: In a landmark development for India’s energy sector, GAIL (India) Limited’s City Gas Distribution (CGD) network in Ranchi has officially commenced the offtake of Coal Bed Methane (CBM) from the North Karanpura CBM Block. This move represents a significant stride in tapping indigenous energy sources and aligning with the national objective of sustainable fuel transition.
Pioneering Indigenous Fuel Utilization
The initiative underscores GAIL’s ongoing efforts to enhance local energy security and promote clean, alternative fuel sources. By integrating CBM—a clean-burning gas extracted from coal seams—into its distribution network, GAIL is helping to reduce dependency on imported fuels and driving the shift toward environmentally responsible energy solutions.
Flagging Off the First CBM LCV
The inaugural Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) carrying approximately 2,000 Standard Cubic Meters (SCM) of CBM was ceremonially flagged off by key officials including:
- Mr. Prashant K Singh, DGM (CGD)
- Mr. Vikas Anand, CM (CGD)
- Mr. Saurav Anand, SM (F&S)
Joined by representatives from ONGCL, PEL, and IOCL, the event marked the operational kickoff of CBM transportation in the region.

Boosting Regional Growth and Sustainability
Beyond reducing carbon emissions, this step plays a pivotal role in stimulating local economies by promoting cleaner fuels and fostering industrial activity. The North Karanpura CBM project is expected to serve as a model for similar initiatives nationwide, reinforcing India’s vision of a cleaner, more resilient energy infrastructure.
Aligning with National Energy Goals
This development aligns with the Government of India’s focus on Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) and supports its broader goals to diversify the country’s energy mix. CBM’s integration into CGD networks is a testament to the country’s evolving commitment to low-carbon growth and energy innovation.
