New Delhi: Retired IAS officer Nagaraju Maddirala has been appointed Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services (IL&FS) for a period of two years from the date he assumes charge. The Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) communicated the appointment through an order dated October 12, 2026.
A 1993-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Tripura cadre, Maddirala takes over the top leadership position following the conclusion of Nand Kishore’s tenure as IL&FS chairman and managing director on September 30, 2026.
According to the ministry, Maddirala was designated for the position after being appointed to the IL&FS board. The Mumbai bench of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) had appointed him as a director of the company through an order dated October 1, 2026. The subsequent MCA order formalised his designation as chairman and managing director.
Under the terms of the appointment, Maddirala will receive a monthly remuneration of ₹5.5 lakh, along with a company car and company-leased accommodation. The ministry has directed IL&FS to complete the necessary procedural formalities to implement the order, which was issued with the approval of the competent authority.
The order was signed by Sunidhi Misra, Deputy Director in the ministry’s Legal and Prosecution Division. Copies were forwarded to Maddirala, the Directorate General of Corporate Affairs, the Regional Director (Western Region) in Mumbai, and the Registrar of Companies, Mumbai.
His appointment comes as IL&FS continues its resolution and asset monetisation process following the debt crisis that brought the infrastructure financier under significant financial and regulatory scrutiny.

During his service in Tripura, Maddirala held a range of field and secretariat assignments. His early positions included Assistant Collector, Additional District Magistrate in Kamalpur and West Tripura, and District Magistrate in South Tripura.
These assignments exposed him to district administration and the implementation of government programmes at the grassroots level.
He later served as Director of Tribal Welfare in Tripura. One of the initiatives associated with his tenure was work towards establishing Ekalavya tribal residential schools, aimed at expanding educational opportunities for tribal students.
Maddirala subsequently held senior positions in the state secretariat, including Secretary and Principal Secretary assignments across several departments. His responsibilities covered Health, Women and Child Development, Finance, and Industries and Commerce.
The range of his state-level assignments provided experience in social-sector administration, public expenditure, industrial development and departmental policy implementation.
Central Deputation: Economic Affairs and the Ministry of Coal
Maddirala’s central deputation began with an assignment in the Department of Economic Affairs under the Ministry of Finance. From 2004 to 2008, he served as a Director, handling the Japan, North America and World Bank divisions.
The position involved work on international economic relations and matters concerning India’s engagement with major international institutions and partners.

IL&FS Appointment Follows Nand Kishore’s Tenure
The Ministry of Corporate Affairs’ order follows the completion of Nand Kishore’s tenure as IL&FS chairman and managing director on September 30, 2026.
The appointment process involved Maddirala’s induction onto the company’s board through the NCLT’s Mumbai bench on October 1, followed by the ministry’s designation of him as CMD on October 12.
His tenure will run for two years from the date he assumes charge, rather than from the date of the order. The ministry has also specified his remuneration and other employment-related benefits and instructed the company to complete the required formalities.
IL&FS has been working through a resolution and asset monetisation process after its debt crisis triggered extensive efforts to address its financial obligations and restructure its operations. Maddirala’s appointment places a former senior finance secretary and experienced administrator at the head of the company as that process continues.
With experience spanning state administration, the Union government, public sector undertakings and international economic institutions, Maddirala brings a broad administrative and financial background to the leadership of IL&FS.
