New Delhi: NHPC Limited and Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL) have signed two long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) for the supply of electricity from major upcoming hydroelectric projects in India. The agreements mark a significant step toward strengthening India’s clean energy infrastructure and ensuring long-term energy security.
The PPAs were signed in Vadodara on June 30, 2026.
Details of the Power Purchase Agreements
Under the agreements, NHPC will supply electricity generated from two large hydropower projects:
- Sawalkot Hydro Electric Project – 1,856 MW capacity located in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir
- Kamala Hydro Electric Project – 1,720 MW capacity located in Arunachal Pradesh
Together, the projects account for a total planned capacity of 3,576 MW of renewable hydropower generation.

Long-Term Supply Arrangement of 40 Years
As per the agreements, NHPC will supply power to GUVNL for a period of 40 years from the Commercial Operation Date (COD) of each respective project.
This long-term arrangement is designed to ensure:
- Stable and reliable supply of clean hydroelectric power
- Strengthening of India’s energy security
- Support for growing electricity demand
- Progress toward national renewable energy targets
Focus on Clean Energy Transition
Speaking on the occasion, NHPC Chairman and Managing Director Bhupender Gupta said the signing of the long-term PPAs represents another milestone in NHPC’s commitment to India’s clean energy transition.
He highlighted that the partnership will:
- Promote sustainable hydropower development
- Enhance long-term energy reliability
- Contribute to India’s renewable energy goals
- Strengthen the country’s power sector resilience
Officials Present at Signing Ceremony
The agreements were signed by senior commercial officials of both NHPC and GUVNL. The signing ceremony in Vadodara was attended by executives and officers from both organizations, reflecting the importance of the collaboration.

The Sawalkot and Kamala hydroelectric projects are expected to play a key role in expanding India’s renewable energy capacity. These projects will also strengthen the country’s position in the hydropower sector while supporting large-scale clean electricity generation.
