New Delhi: NHPC Limited has announced the commencement of commercial operations of Unit-1 (250 MW) of the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, marking a significant milestone in one of India’s largest hydroelectric power projects.
According to a regulatory filing, the Commercial Operation Date (CoD) for Unit-1 has been declared effective from 00:00 hours on March 20, 2026.
Major Milestone in India’s Hydropower Sector
With the commissioning of Unit-1, NHPC has now operationalized three units (Unit-1, Unit-2, and Unit-3) of the 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydro Project. The project is designed with eight units of 250 MW each, and the remaining units will be commissioned in phases.
This development represents a key step in enhancing India’s renewable energy capacity and strengthening energy infrastructure in the region.

Strategic Importance of Subansiri Lower Project
The Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project is located on the Subansiri River, along the border of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. It is considered one of the most strategically important hydropower projects in India due to its scale and impact.
The project aims to:
- Boost clean and renewable energy generation
- Strengthen power supply in the North-Eastern region
- Improve grid stability and reliability
- Support India’s growing electricity demand
Phased Commissioning to Enhance Power Supply
NHPC is implementing a phased commissioning strategy, which ensures a gradual increase in power generation capacity. As more units become operational, the project is expected to significantly contribute to:
- Meeting peak electricity demand
- Reducing dependence on fossil fuels
- Supporting sustainable energy goals
The addition of each unit enhances overall efficiency and ensures better integration into the national power grid.
Boost to Renewable Energy and Sustainability Goals
The Subansiri Lower project aligns with India’s broader focus on renewable energy expansion and climate commitments. Hydropower plays a crucial role in balancing energy supply, especially as the country increases its reliance on solar and wind energy.
By adding large-scale hydropower capacity, NHPC is contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable energy mix.
