New Delhi/Neyveli: NLC India Limited (NLCIL) and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) on 28 February 2026 at NLCIL’s Corporate Office in Neyveli. The project focuses on “Materials and Process Design for Alternative to Tungsten Carbide Excavator Bucket Teeth Inserts for Mining Industry,” aiming to promote indigenous material development for mining applications.
The MoA was exchanged between Mr. Neeraj Kumar, CGM–Unit Head/CARD representing NLCIL, and Dr. Pikee Priya, Assistant Professor from IISc Bangalore, in the presence of Mr. Prasanna Kumar Motupalli, Chairman & Managing Director, NLCIL; Mr. M. Venkatachalam, Director (Power), NLCIL; and Mr. Rajesh Pratap Singh Sisodia, Director (Planning & Projects), NLCIL.
Focus on Indigenous Material Development and Mining Efficiency
The collaboration seeks to develop alternatives to tungsten carbide inserts used in excavator bucket teeth, a critical component in mining operations. This initiative aims to:
- Reduce dependence on imported materials
- Promote cost-effective and durable domestic alternatives
- Enhance operational efficiency in mining equipment
- Strengthen research capabilities in the Indian mining sector
Through this project, NLCIL and IISc aim to address a pressing industrial requirement by combining applied research with advanced material engineering.
Part of NLCIL’s Strategic R&D Collaborations
The MoA with IISc is part of NLCIL’s broader R&D vision under its Centre for Applied Research & Development (CARD). Over the years, NLCIL has initiated structured collaborations with premier institutions such as:
- IISc, Bangalore
- IITs across India
- National Institutes of Technology (NITs)
- State Universities
This MoA marks the 13th such collaboration, focusing on indigenous innovation and resource optimization, aligning with the vision of “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (Self-Reliant India).
Supporting National Innovation and Self-Reliance
The project also reflects the guidance of the Minister of Coal and the government’s push to strengthen domestic manufacturing and technological innovation. By focusing on material alternatives, NLCIL aims to enhance India’s mining sector capabilities while reducing dependency on imported tungsten carbide, supporting both industrial and economic self-reliance.
