NMDC Steel Becomes First in India to Get BIS Certification for Hot Rolled Steel for Pipeline Transportation

The state-of-the-art steel plant achieves IS 18384:2023 certification, setting a new benchmark in quality and safety standards for the petroleum and natural gas pipeline sector.

Raipur: In a significant achievement for India’s steel sector, NMDC Steel Limited (NSL) has become the first company in the country to receive an Indian Standards (IS) license for “Hot Rolled Steel Strip, Sheet, and Plates for Welded Steel Pipe for Pipeline Transportation Systems – General Requirements (IS 18384:2023).”

The certification was awarded by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) during the World Standards Day 2025 celebration at the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Auditorium, Raipur.

Recognition at a Prestigious Event

The BIS license was formally presented to Mr. Amrit Narayan, Chief General Manager (Steel), NMDC Steel, by Mr. Vishnu Deo Sai, Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh. The ceremony was graced by Mr. Dayal Das Baghel, Minister of Food & Civil Supplies, and Mr. S.K. Gupta, Director & Head, BIS Raipur.

This milestone reinforces NMDC Steel’s commitment to quality, innovation, and sustainable industrial growth, positioning the company at the forefront of steel manufacturing excellence in India.

The IS 18384:2023 certification represents a crucial benchmark in the production of steel products designed for pipeline transportation systems in the petroleum and natural gas sector. The standard ensures superior safety, reliability, and performance, enabling the delivery of world-class steel solutions to critical industries.

Commenting on the achievement, Mr. Amitava Mukherjee, CMD, NMDC Steel, said:
