NTPC Charts 244 GW Growth by 2037 with ₹7 Lakh Crore Investment to Strengthen India’s Energy Security

NTPC aims to expand renewable energy, nuclear power, and energy storage projects, strengthening India’s energy security and supporting the country’s clean energy transition.

New Delhi: NTPC Limited, India’s largest power generation company under the Ministry of Power, has unveiled an ambitious roadmap to scale its installed capacity to 244 gigawatts (GW) by 2037, requiring a capital expenditure of approximately Rs 7 lakh crore. The roadmap includes both conventional and green energy sources, reflecting NTPC’s commitment to meeting India’s growing energy demand sustainably.

Operational Capacity and Recent Additions

NTPC currently operates over 85,000 MW of group-level capacity, supplying electricity to nearly one-fourth of the country’s power requirements. Recently, the company added 359.58 MW through solar projects implemented by its subsidiaries in Gujarat and Rajasthan, marking further progress in its renewable energy portfolio.

Expansion Plans and Construction Pipeline

At present, NTPC has 32 GW of capacity under various stages of construction. According to CMD Gurdeep Singh, shared during a lenders’ meet, the company aims to reach 149 GW by 2032 and further expand to 244 GW by 2037. The strategy demonstrates NTPC’s focus on both scaling capacity and diversifying its energy mix, including thermal, renewable, and emerging technologies.

Investment and Strategic Initiatives

The company’s roadmap envisages a capital expenditure of around Rs 7 lakh crore, covering multiple strategic initiatives:

  • Development of energy storage systems
  • Expansion of pumped storage hydro projects
  • Investments in nuclear power
  • Exploration of green hydrogen and chemicals

These initiatives are designed to enhance energy security, reduce carbon footprint, and support India’s transition toward cleaner energy solutions.

Focus on Renewable and Sustainable Energy

NTPC’s long-term plan emphasizes renewable energy development, including solar, wind, and hybrid projects, aligning with India’s net-zero and climate goals. The company also aims to integrate advanced technologies in grid management and energy storage to ensure reliable and sustainable electricity supply nationwide.
