NTPC’s NETRA to Launch Plasma Gasification-Based Green Hydrogen Plant in Greater Noida

State-Owned Power Giant to Produce 1 Tonne of Green Hydrogen Daily from Waste, Strengthening India’s Clean Energy Push
Indian Masterminds Stories

New Delhi: NTPC’s research and development (R&D) arm, NETRA, has announced plans to establish a plasma gasification-based green hydrogen plant at its campus in Greater Noida. The project aligns with NTPC’s strategy to expand its presence in emerging clean energy technologies and bolster India’s transition toward sustainable energy solutions.

Plant Designed to Produce 1 Tonne of Green Hydrogen Daily

According to the company statement, the proposed facility will have the capacity to produce one tonne of green hydrogen per day. NTPC emphasized that the plant underscores its commitment to sustainability and its efforts to integrate innovative clean energy solutions into its operations.

Waste-to-Hydrogen Using Advanced Plasma Gasification

The project will leverage advanced plasma gasification technology to convert waste into hydrogen. NTPC explained, “The Advanced Plasma Gasification technology will convert waste into tar-free syngas, which will be further processed to produce hydrogen using PSA/Membrane Technology.”

The plant will primarily use municipal solid waste-derived refuse-derived fuel (MSW-RDF) and agricultural waste as feedstock, effectively combining waste management with clean energy generation.

Part of NTPC’s Broader Clean Energy Expansion

NTPC, which currently supplies around one-fourth of India’s power requirements, has an installed capacity exceeding 85 GW, with an additional 30.90 GW under construction. Of this, 13.3 GW will be from renewable energy sources.

The company has set ambitious long-term targets, aiming for 149 GW by 2032, including 60 GW from renewable energy, and 244 GW by 2037. Beyond power generation, NTPC has diversified into e-mobility, battery storage, pumped hydro storage, waste-to-energy, nuclear power, and green hydrogen solutions, demonstrating its commitment to a holistic approach in clean energy.

NTPC Limited is India’s largest public sector undertaking and energy conglomerate, contributing significantly to the country’s power supply and renewable energy development. The company is at the forefront of innovation in clean energy technologies, focusing on sustainable power generation, green hydrogen solutions, and integrated energy infrastructure projects across India.
